Billy Bob Thornton Likes It Raw (Sometimes)

Billy Bob Thornton is living in the Year of the Raw. Wait, isn’t 2010 the Year of the Tiger? Yes, but it’s Billy’s year to eat healthy in an attempt to balance other nasty activities he does like smoking.
Consuming a diet of what he describes as “beyond vegan,” the actor follows a strict raw diet of fruits, vegetables, and plant proteins, but he alternates that with eating “regular stuff.”
“I’ve done it off and on for years and years. So I’ll go for a year and eat raw and then go back to the regular stuff,” Thornton said. “I mean I don’t have anything against butchering cows, it’s not a moral thing. It’s just a health thing. It allows me to do things I wanna do so I eat really healthy and it balances out the other things I like to do, like smoke.”
We don’t really think raw fruits balance out the carbon monoxide, benzene, various pesticides, formaldehyde, tobacco-specific N-nitrosamines and metals like arsenic found in cigarettes. But, along with quitting, Thorntons chances of a longer, healthier life (not to mention one for those around him) are probably better than if he munched on beef jerky instead of celery every time he went for a smoke break.
