Robin Quivers Running Marathon For Food Education Programs For Children

It’s no wonder Robin Quivers is searching for the perfect vegan energy gel. The radio personality and Howard Stern‘s sidekick is gearing up for a New York City Marathon that takes place on November 7th, 2010 and will benefit two charities who’s goals are to help families cook nutritious, healthy food, The Sylvia Center and Family Cook Productions.
Americans are cooking less in the home than in previous years. Data collected from the The Residential Energy Consumption Survey (RECS) found less people were cooking 2 or more meals per day or even 1 meal per day at home in 2001 than they were in 1993. This could be due to time constraints of a modern society, or, like some food activists have suggested, more generations are growing up not knowing how to properly prepare nutritious meals for themselves. By targeting children at a young age, hopefully, programs like The Sylvia Center and Family Cook Productions will reverse these trends.
Both programs empower children, teens and families to eat better by offering cooking and nutrition classes and incorporating sources of freshly grown food, such as from the Farmers Market and community gardens into mealtime.
Family Cook Products offers food enrichment in six areas, one of which is for middle and high school students, the Jr./Teen Battle Chef, which is a licensed curriculum available to both schools and community programs. Jr./Teen Battle Chef is akin to an Iron Chef competition, where teens form teams and race against the clock to prepare various meals while learning the details of cooking tools, ingredients and more.
The Sylvia Center offers several food educational programs for children from Kindergarten through high school, from the Veggie of the Month program to the Seed To Plate course offering instruction on gardening, planting and harvesting to the See, Touch and Taste program which aims to introduce the very young to the origins of food in the wild.
