Michelle Obama invited local school children to harvest vegetables from the garden when she was caught holding a prized possession from the patch.

The sweet potato was picked at the beginning of prime season (October through January) and this Thanksgiving favorite in the U.S. is sure to please White House guests in some dish soon.

Sometimes mistaken for yams, sweet potatoes are actually an entirely different vegetable, a root of the vine in the morning glory family that dates back to 750 B.C. in Peruvian records.

For the best sweet potato experience, select tubers with tight, unwrinkled skins and no blemishes or bruises. Stored in a cool, dark, dry area (about 55 degrees Fahrenheit), sweet potatoes can last up to 3-4 weeks if freshly picked. Tubers bought from the store should be used within one week. Once cooked, they can be stored in the refrigerator covered for 4-5 days or frozen for 10-12 months in an airtight container.

If you’re looking for a recipe other than the usual sweet potato pie, we can’t think of a better way to consume your veggie burger than with Tropical Sweet Potato Fries seasoned with black pepper, chili powder, paprika and cilantro.

These sweet potatoes were implanted in the night. These were not grown in the garden.

What a joke. This is a fact.

Where does the White House get the sweet potato starters? I watched HGTV with the White House veggie Iron Chef, and I want the sweet potato link for starters.
