Today’s tip in the Dorm Room Diet giveaway is all about budgeting. Sure, you need the right foods for energy, but it’s also about managing time and figuring out how to store you food in a tiny dorm room, cubicle or even in a studio apartment. It’s not just money that’s a part of the “budget.”

The Dorm Room Diet recommends keeping healthy, grab-and-go snacks handy for busy times and keeping small, nutrient packed foods like nuts, dried fruit, popcorn and peanut butter handy that won’t take up a lot of space in a refrigerator at work or home. Also, if you’re a college student, The Dorm Room Diet, advises checking out the cafeteria versus the restaurants on the off campus strip. You’re bound to find at least something your ethics and tastes are compatible with and it’s probably already paid for (by mom or dad, student loans, scholarships) as part of a campus meal plan.

I always set a limit when I go shopping. This way, I’m buying enough for me to eat comfortably, but at the same time, I’m controlling my weight AND managing my finances. You chuck two birds with one stone!

I don’t strictly follow the food pyramid, but I keep a picture of it in the kitchen as a healthy reminder. I make sure I get my fruits and veggies every day so I know I’m eating right.

I try to buy organic food when I can. Not only is it fresh, but I also directly support local farming communities with my purchase.

    Check the bulk bins!!
Also, stores like whole foods and trader joe’s usually have coupon pages.
Buy dried beans and rice and cook your own. Dried beans can be left on the counter all day while you’re at school, or overnight while you sleep, and can be cooked in a mini crock pot (I found one at the thrift store for $3).
Also, things like tofu scramble, and easy to put together burritos can be made the day/night before, and stored in containers, then quickly heated in the morning, or grabbed for a quick lunch.

This is a great guide, and my tip for staying healthy is probably very obvious, but here it is: drink lots of water! It makes you feel fuller so you eat less, and flushes toxins from your system. Its refreshing and makes you feel better than soda!!

Making a list before grocery shopping is not overrated. It helps you to spend less and realize what you need to buy over things you don’t need like processed junk food. Buying organic foods can be difficult for a girl, or guy, on a budget. Save up for trips to a farmer’s market or Whole Foods. Your body will reap the rewards, nutrional value and an overall great feeling!, of the food. Get enough sleep at night. It’s crucial for good functioning during the day!
