Pamela Anderson Lends Paw To Gulf Coast Displaced Dogs

Pamela Anderson gave 50 dogs displaced from the Gulf Coast oil spill a reason to bark with joy, as she worked with PETA and the SPCA to give the dogs care they needed while drawing attention to the plight of animals that are often forgotten during disasters that affect humans.
“We just wanted to do something practical that I could do hands on and, you know, we’ve all heard what’s happening with the shelters and how they are overrun with animals being surrendered,” she said. “People can’t feed their families, they are losing their jobs or moving in with their families and maybe someone is allergic to pets — who knows what the circumstances are, but the shelters are full of animals that need help.”
Anderson paid for the dogs’ veterinary care, which included spaying and neutering, and even adopted two of her own. Peta will assist in finding the other 48 dogs a new home.
Since the events in the Gulf Coast, shelters have found themselves overwhelmed with the addition of animals dropped off by people who can no longer care for them. One worker at the St. Bernard Parish animal shelter southeast of New Orleans estimated their intake has probably “doubled or tripled” since the spill.
