Kristin Bauer and her newlywed beau, musician Abri Van Statten, have a love for animals and the environment in common, as they’re both working with whale conservation.

“Right now, Abri and I are working with the International Fund for Animal Welfare and Pierce and Keely Brosnan to protect whales… (A key International Whaling Commission) vote is in the next two weeks,” Kristin told the Milwaukee Wisconsin Journal Sentinel.

Kristin is probably referring to the vote by the IWC on whether to lift the 25 year ban on commercial whaling.

The IWC is set to meet in Morocco this week to vote on a compromise drafted by the agency’s chairman that would allow countries like Japan and Norway to hunt whales in smaller numbers versus using what some cause the guise of killing whales for the purpose of research, which some have argued is a ruse for capturing the animals that are secretly sold for meat.

Proponents of the ban lift say it will save more whales from being killed, but many are questioning if this is a step forward in preserving the species.

According to The Telegraph, the German Parliament has urged its government to reject the proposal, as well as the Environment Protection Minister of the Australian government.

What’s your take on the situation? Does allowing killing result in less of it?
