Jillian Michaels is asking parents to join her in writing to their representatives in Congress in support of H.R 5504, the Improving Nutrition for America’s Children Act.
The bill would make more plant based meals available to students, as well as more fresh fruit and vegetables, improve safety conditions and make more children eligible for free or reduced lunch. The points are highlighted on the house.gov blog and include just a few of the following.
- Establishing more farm to school programs and school gardens to connect children to local produce.
- Improving food safety requirements in school settings, including better training for food service workers on food safety and quicker recall notification of foods.
- Enroll children in school lunch programs through Medicaid/SCHIP data instead of requiring extra applications.
The bill also wants to provide the first increase in reimbursement for meals in 30 years–by a rate of 6 cents per meal.
