Defensive lineman for the Oakland Raiders David Carter is one in the elite group of athletes who choose to power their game with plants.
Carter wrote an opinion article for Inside Bay Area, discussing the importance of what goes into his body.
“I must ensure I’m consuming sufficient calories to keep full and have the energy to perform at my peak while not overloading and slowing my body down,” he wrote. “My career depends on it. So many people are shocked when they learn that I fuel my body with a plant-based — vegan — diet. I’m just shocked that it took me 26 years to gain the wisdom to do it!”
Carter discusses some of the factors that led him to change his diet, as well as the benefits.
He cites the film Forks Over Knives, the effects of meat and dairy on health and the number of animals being saved every year as just a few of the benefits to going plant-based.
Since replacing animal products in his diet, Carter has noticed that his injuries on the field have declined. He’s also experienced decreased recovery times and longer endurance.
He also points out that he’s in good company, naming some famous big names in sports who’ve seen success with and support the vegetarian and vegan lifestyle.
