Country Music Television wanted to wish all of its singers and fans a happy meat-free day.
The network located in Nashville, Tennessee sent a Tweet wishing everyone a happy World Vegetarian Day and asked if they could go veg.
“Happy #WorldVegetarianDay! Can you go meat-free today or did you already eat bacon? Either way, our #CMTvideos are on now & delish!”
Not everyone could, and a few followers let thought the station’s message was a serious conflict of interest to its theme.
“wtf! youre a country station making money off the western lifestyle. you should not be promoting vegetarians! ”
“Now come on, watching #CMTvideos is like eating a juicy ribeye not sautéed tofu!”
Others chided CMT for offending farmers and ranchers, two groups that allegedly make up a large portion of its fan base.
CMT responded that it likes “people of all eating styles” and that “We gave both options in a fun tweet. We love all eating choices and appreciate ranching families.”
One of country music’s most popular stars, Carrie Underwood, can certainly understand that point. The mostly vegan American Idol alumnus has parents who raise and sell cows for beef.
