Paul McCartney has joined several celebrities in the call for Mali the elephant to be released from a Manila zoo.
In a letter addressed to President Benigno Aquino III, McCartney describes footage of Mali in the zoo “heartbreaking,” and emphasizes how a sanctuary can provide the environment a large, active animal like the elephant needs.
“You only have to have a heart to see what so many experts have already pointed out,” McCartney writes, “that the way she continously favors one leg is sign of constant pain.”
“I was shocked to learn that Mali has never even received proper preventative foot care when foot and joint problems are the leading cause of death among captive elephants kept on hard surfaces and when this type of care is something that every reputable zoo in the world offers.”
Actress Pamela Anderson, who like McCartney is also a longtime vegetarian, wrote a letter to Manila’s president earlier this year, expressing the same wishes.
