Quantcast Vegetarian StarDavey Havok Pens First Novel Inspired By Vegan Banana Bread (Video)

Davey Havok

Davey Havok, frontman for AFI, has written his first novel.

Pop Kids tells the story of Score Massi, an 18-year old living in a small California town and fixated with many things in life, including pop culture, moving to a big city, and “vegan banana bread,” according to the summary on its back cover.

Such a life is often portrayed in the media as one that includes dabbling in drugs and alcohol on your way up or once you reach the top.

That isn’t the case for Massi and it never was for Havok, as he explained how he got involved with the vegan, straight-edge movement.

“I joined the movement in 1991, and obviously have been straight edge ever since,” Havok said. “To me straight edge is a philosophy and movement based on respect of others through respect to yourself. It’s first and foremost about abstinence of drug-use and about standing in opposition to drug-use. And I truly believe that godlessness is also a part of the true straight edge.”

Massi is not a vegetarian, but has a penchant for gobbling up vegan goodies. While he aspires to be a vegan someday, he struggles with regular setbacks of forgetting that things like bacon aren’t vegetarian.

The trailer to the book can be seen below.
