Russell Simmons Wants Cool Vegetarian Food In Needy Neighborhoods

Russell Simmons has teamed up with another entrepreneur to open a food factory and chain of food stores in neighborhoods that don’t normally have access to healthy food.
Simmons and Hajj Hasaun Muhammad hope to expand the business to several areas around Brooklyn, including Brownsville and Central Harlem.
As for the nature of the food to be offered, Simmons said, “We want cool, fun vegetarian stuf.”
“I see people all day long traveling for miles just to get to a Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods. Little old ladies, women with strollers, blacks, whites, everybody travels to find better food,” Muhammad said.
“The grocery stores in my neighborhood sell rotten fruits and rotten vegetables; I wouldn’t spend my money on that,” he added.
Simmons and Muhammad are planning to use crowdfunding to get the factory and store up and running, and a link to contribute can be found on Indiegogo.com. They are looking to raise around $175,000 to pay for a portion of the costs.
