Quantcast Vegetarian StarOreo Celebrates 101st Birthday Accidentally Vegan Purposely Kosher

Oreo

The Oreo celebrates its 101st birthday today.

The simple cookie sandwich that’s been around for several generations just happens to also be one of those accidentally vegan snacks. That means you’re almost guarantee to find it at regular places like gas stations when you’re stuck in the middle of somewhere where the locals still equivalate “vegetarian” with lousy hunter

This little cookie has some interesting history behind it, including the fact its pre-vegan days included pork.

According to the Huffington Post:

“After popular demand, Oreos became Kosher in December 1997. The conversion from non-Kosher to Kosher took about three years and was probably the priciest ever, according to Cornell Food Science Professor Joe Regenstein.”

In a list of several facts, the article continues to explain, “The original recipe called for pig lard, hence the whole not-conforming-to-Jewish-dietary-law thing. ”

Celebrate the Oreo’s 101st by eating one the way you like it: twisting it and eating the center first, taking a bite of the whole sandwich or dunking one in soy, almond, rice or coconut milk.

A vegan, Oreo milkshake doesn’t sound bad either.
