Executives have been accused of living lavish lives, but if they spend their fortune on vegan food, is it all that bad?

Hubert Lacroix, president of Canadian Broadcasting Channel, has made news for sharing a breakfast with former CBC ombudsman Kirk Lapointe that resulted in a total bill of $53.76 to taxpayers.

Sun News published a receipt for the meal, which included french toast, a latte, two juices, coffee and a bowl of $11 vegan oatmeal, which came in second to the french toast for most expensive breakfast item.

There is nothing wrong with having a bowl of expensive oats, as a spokesperson for CBC agreed.

“All hospitality expenses of the president and CEO require the approval of the chair of the board. Approval of this expense was received,” said CBC spokesman Angus McKinnon.

However, if you lack the same approval from your own bank account, there are plenty of ways to get a cheap, vegan breakfast.

Some vending machines offer instant oatmeal for a couple of bucks. If you’re near a grocery store that sells frozen vegetarian items, Amy’s Breakfast Burrito will only set you back by about $3 or so.
