Alex Rodriguez, Roy Halladay Opting For Synthetic Leather
Written by Vegetarian Star on June 30th, 2011 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Fashion.
Not long ago, Vegetarian Star brought you the news about New York Yankees pitcher Brian Gordon using a synthetic leather glove.
The maker of the glove, Carpenter Trade Company, says several athletes like Alex Rodriguez and Roy Halladay are opting for synthetic styles and adds these will be the “industry styles of the future.”
The makers of synthetic sportswear and animal rights activists may have different goals in mind when promoting the product, the first being for profit and the latter for animal welfare, but they both can probably agree that factory farming is the root of evil.
Carpenter Trade Company writes:
Today’s leather usually comes from factory-farmed cattle. These animals are confined to feed lots where they don’t build muscle or thick hides. They are fed unnatural, fattening diets of grains supplemented with growth hormones. They go to slaughter at a young age (about 14 months). The resulting leather is inferior. While animal leathers have gotten worse, man-made leathers are always advancing.
The company recognizes customers seek its synthetic products for both performance and ethical reasons.
We use synthetics based on their performance; nevertheless, some of our customers are drawn to us for the simple fact that our gloves have never been made with animal leathers. Some web sources advertise “vegan” gloves which are actually cheap imported vinyl gloves made with leather laces and wool. While our gloves never use leather we do use wool for padding. Those wanting absolutely no animal materials can request all-synthetic padding from us; such gloves are the only vegan gloves available anywhere.
