Wayne Pacelle Of Humane Society Writes “The Bond” About Animal-Human Relationships

Wayne Pacelle, CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, has written his first book, The Bond: Our Kindship with Animals, Our Call to Defend Them, set for release next month by William Morrow.
Pacelle breaks The Bond into three parts: the relationship between people and animals, the destruction of the human-animal relationship and arguments against some of those most opposed to strenghthening animal welfare standards.
Pacelle is said to tackle animal abuse in many forms, including those “sanctioned” by governments, such as the Canadian seal hunt and the killing of bison in Yellowstone National Park.
As expected, there is coverage of Michael Vick, the NFL player who spent time in jail for his involvement with dog fighting and who now works with the HSUS on campaigns to prevent this.
Abuse in farming, pet shops and kennels, as well as abandonment that can occur during natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina are all touched upon.
During his 17 years with the HSUS, Pacelle has worked on the legislative level to end cruel animal practices in different states, such as cockfighting. He’s also fought for better treatment of farm animals through state initiatives like California’s Prop 2 which phases out confining some farm animals and Missouri’s Prop B, which sets tough standards for breeders to counteract some of the negative aspects of puppy mills.
A trailer to The Bond can be viewed here, and the book is available for pre-order.
