Quantcast Vegetarian StarWeird Al Yankovic’s Twinkie Dog And Processed Food Guessing Game (Video)

While being interviewed by the NBC Today Show, Weird Al Yankovic shared his recipe for a Twinkie hot dog.

This dish involves taking a Twinkie and slicing it in half, then placing a tofu pup in the middle and topping with your favorite toppings. Go throw up now. But come right back and finish reading.

Although some tout the weight loss benefits of a Twinkie diet, the yellow submarine is full of sugar, high fructose corn syrup, dyes and other preservative items that one person found so interesting, he photographed all 37 ingredients in it so viewers could play a matching game to figure out which one is which.

It’s easy to locate the red dye, but can you pinpoint the other ingredients, which include:

“Enriched Bleached Wheat Flour [Flour, Reduced Iron, B Vitamins (Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate (B1), Riboflavin (B2), Folic Acid)], Corn Syrup, Sugar, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Water, Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable and/or Animal Shortening (Soybean, Cottonseed and/or Canola Oil, Beef Fat), Whole Eggs, Dextrose. Contains 2% or Less of: Modified Corn Starch, Glucose, Leavenings (Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate, Baking Soda, Monocalcium Phosphate), Sweet Dairy Whey, Soy Protein Isolate, Calcium and Sodium Caseinate, Salt, Mono and Diglycerides, Polysorbate 60, Soy Lecithin, Soy Flour, Cornstarch, Cellulose Gum, Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate, Natural and Artificial Flavors, Sorbic Acid (to Retain Freshness), Yellow 5, Red 40.”

Steve Ettlinger did an investigation of what goes into so many processed foods found on the shelves today and wrote about his experiences in Twinkie, Deconstructed: My Journey to Discover How the Ingredients Found in Processed Foods Are Grown, Mined (Yes, Mined), and Manipulated Into What America Eat.

Some reviewers were disappointed to find it only told the story of how things like cellulose is manufactured without looking at the health effects of these  foods on humans. Still, sounds like an interesting read.

There’s one  important reason not to eat that Twinkie dog. If you read the ingredients carefully, you saw that “beef fat” renders it inappropriate for any veg. Maybe that’s why vegetarian Yankovic cautions he doesn’t recommend his own creation.
