Sting recently gave his support to Ric O’Barry, former dolphin trainer who was featured in “The Cove,” during a meeting backstage at one of his concerts.
Before the concert, Sting told the Associated Press he was blown away by the movie and that humans “should not be eating dolphins.”
The two have reportedly been friends since the movie depicting the killing of the animals in Taiji, Japan was created. Sting insists that change will come through dialogue and thinks many Japanese are opposed to the hunt.
If people in Japan aren’t concerned with ending the hunt for the animals’ sake, maybe they’ll at least think twice about supporting the activities in The Cove after learning how it affects humans.
Two council men from Taiji, Junichiro Yamashita and Hisato Ryono, bought whale meat at local supermarkets and had it tested at a laboratory. Most samples were found to have more than 15 times the amount of mercury the Japanese Health Ministry considers acceptable and 12 times as much methylmercury, the form of mercury formed when mercury comes into contact with organic molecules in the environment.
Another test found levels of mercury in Taiji residents to be above the national average and some suspect these results are due to their fondness for whale and dolphin meat.
High mercury levels in the body can cause multiple nervous system problems and death.
