If you didn’t give a roasted seitan about what celebrities do, you probably wouldn’t be reading this post.
The organizers of Climate Week realize that if people like Gwyneth Paltrow put up a story about composting poop on Goop, a trend will soon follow. That’s why they commissioned Millward Brown, a brand research consultancy, to use its “Cebra” (celebrity-brand) index to survey people to see which celebrities carry the greatest influence in inciting fans to act on saving the environment.
“We are often told that we are living in the “age of celebrity”. Yes, it’s an utterly depressing thought, but some believe we should exploit this collective obsession by putting to good use the mighty influence many celebrities wield,” writes The Guardian. “The reason is simple: many people – whether they admit it or not – look up to celebrities.”
And it may be even more utterly depressing to think of “scientific survey” and “celebrity” used in the same sentence, but let’s take a look at what Millward Brown did and found.
Twenty celebrities were chosen that were known as either a “well-known activist”, “environmentally inclined but not an activist”, or “not known for activism.” Then, 500 adults aged 16-65 were asked how much influence each celebrity had on environmental issues. The adults were asked to assign each celebrity a score measuring “familiarity”, “affinity”, “media attention”, “role model” and “talent.”
As might be expected, Al Gore made #1, but many celebrities not known for specific environmental activism, like Fearne Cotton, also made the list. It was concluded that celebrities who aren’t necessarily actively green still have tremendous influence. Therefore, you should put their faces on a globe or make them get naked in the rainforest for the next major eco campaign.
Coldplay’s Chris Martin, a known vegetarian, made #7, which tickles us pink.
Most scientists agree that meat production is a great contributor to global warming. If Martin can convince everyone to carry re-usuable shopping bags to Waitrose and Whole Foods to pick up their tofu and vital wheat gluten, we’ll be making progress. If we can just get him to stop rejecting organic chocolate.
The entire list of influential eco celebrities is available at The Guardian.
