Arnold Schwarzenegger Makes California Cage-Free State–A.B. 1437

The Terminator is helping to terminate hen cruelty in California.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has just signed a law that will require all whole (shell) eggs sold in California to come from hens that were able to, “stand up, lie down, turn around, and fully extend their limbs without touching one another or the sides of an enclosure,” according to the Humane Society blog.
That means California will essentially be a cage-free state.
A.B. 1437, which has long been backed by the Humane Society, applies the standards set forth against certain types of confinement for laying hens in Proposition 2 to the sale of shell eggs.
Humane Society CEO Wayne Pacelle writes:
“With 40 million consumers in California, it would be hard to overestimate the potential of this bill to change the way laying hens are treated throughout the United States.”
The law takes into effect 2015.
