Microsoft Vegetarians Unite–MSVeg Provided Needed Cafe Updates

Microsoft makes their vegetarian and vegan techies happy by offering an extensive selection of appropriate food through the food service provider located on the campuses, which probably has a lot to do with the activism of a group called MSVeg.
MSVeg is a group of about 650 active members who are employees of the company who refused to carry peanut butter and jelly to work every day. As a result, it’s a lot easier to be a vegetarian or vegan at Bill Gates’ empire than it was a decade ago.
Mark Aggar, leader of MSVeg, had an interview with IVU online. A few highlights:
How the idea for MSVeg came about:
“It was formed out of frustration of not having very good or consistent vegan choices in the MS cafeterias and the suspicion that there were a lot of folks at MS who felt the same. Basically I formed it to create a loud voice for better food choices for veg*ns.”
“Changes implemented since working with Microsoft food service provider, Eurest:
Aside from increases in choices (the primary goal), there is a much greater awareness of veg issues among all levels of the dining staff. Food preparation is much better: there are green handled serving spoons and spatulas, green cutting boards and training for the staff on how to use these. Additionally, there are many specialty items such as vegan cheese and mayo. The most recent highlight has been a Eurest operated vegetarian ‘café’ that serves items such as mushroom and root vegetable flatbreads and oven baked sweet potato ‘fries’.”

Hey thanks for letting people know about this! I’ve worked for the company for 14 years (overseas and in the US) and I’m always grateful for the different ways they value diversity (and health), this being one – I love that I have so many veg*n options to choose from (including a new Vegan thai food stand in one of our bigger food courts in Redmond) as well as such an awesome community of fellow veg*ns that inspire, educate and entertain me 🙂
P.S. Most of the cafes are also promoting “Be a Flexitarian” at their grill stations, in addition to providing veg-specific options 🙂
