Ellen DeGeneres and wife Portia de Rossi have become the latest celebrities to show support for representative Jared Polis‘ bill that would enable schools to provide more vegetarian meals and non-dairy beverage options in cafeterias.
The ladies have sent a written letter to Congress, urging them to back the Healthy School Meals Act.
“Obesity, diabetes and other diet-related health problems are showing up in children at disturbingly high rates,” the letter reads. “One out of five teenagers already has abnormal cholesterol levels. Fighting this epidemic is one of the most urgent challenges we face — and healthy school lunches could play a vital role.”
The couple discusses their switch to completely animal-free diets a couple of years ago, and add that children aren’t different in their motivations to eat alternatives to meat, which include health and the environment.
“Two years ago, we switched to a plant-based diet out of concern for animals and the environment. Many children stop eating meat for the same reasons. Adding vegetarian options in schools would not only benefit these children — it would provide healthier options for all young people.”
Ellen and Portia join a slew of celebrities who’ve contacted lawmakers, including John Salley, Scarlett Johansson, and Tobey Maguire.
