Phil Ivey Lost Vegetarian Bet To Chicken Wings
Written by Vegetarian Star on March 19th, 2010 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Not So Vegetarian.
Remember that million dollar challenge Phil Ivey took from Tom Dwan?
You know, the one where Ivey wouldn’t eat “anything that moves” for a year?
According to Cake Poker, Danish poker magazine Ace interviewd Dwan for next month’s issue and revealed a plate of chicken Ivey encountered while having dinner with friends took the poker player down.
That’s pretty pathetic considering the chicken was already dead.
Although Ivey held out for three weeks, “He couldn’t handle it,” Dwan told Ace. “He realized he couldn’t keep it up for a full year.”

How pathetic that someone couldn’t last as a vegetarian for that kind of money. It’s not even remotely difficult to be vegetarian, especially if you have a lot of dough for meat analogues that taste 99% like the “real” thing.
I guess it shows the only reason people will really stay veg is if they have internal motivation and do it for the right reasons.

Man, talk about easy money. That’s not even a challenge!

It seems like a lot of money, but you have to realize how Ivey thinks. It’s not “I have to pay $150,000 to eat chicken.” It’s “I have to pay 1/1000th of my net worth (I’m really not exagerrating that much here) and I can win that back in an hour at the poker table.” You have to realize that this guy throws down hundreds of thousands on a roll of the dice…this just isn’t significant money to him.
That said, if Dwan is still looking for takers, I’ll gladly go vegetarian for a year.

Supposedly, Phil Ivey ate the chicken wings because they were talking to him and told him to eat it.
So maybe the chicken wasn’t really dead…?

It was an entertaining props bet! I WAS rooting for you!
However, I think Phil should donate money to the Petco foundation — to help animals in need in some of our sponsored shelters, that will be spending Christmas in a cage.
It would be nice to show, even though like myself, I like to eat meat, However at the same time, I work with animals and a small donation can go further then a props bet!

People, this bet was purely show and indirect advertising for fult tilt poker. Also, were taxes paid on this “bet”? I doubt so much.

No such thing as a vegetarian. Almost everything you ever used has animal products in it. Go live in a forest, same way religious people should not use medicine or technology, and people who hate drugs should burn all their music.

@Frantic: What you posted makes no sense. There are a lot of religious people who go to doctors and use technology. 80% of the country aligns themselves with Christianity. If you are refering to fundamentalists, even those use technology and doctors. People who hate drugs like music. Who doesn’t like music?
And ps. not everything has an animal ingredient in it.
Some things, like roads, use animals and that is out of MY control, but I CAN control what I eat and wear, all of which is vegetarian. Just because you can’t change the whole system doesn’t mean you shouldn’t improve on it.

Hello Katherine,
Your response is what makes no sense. Frantic knows what people do and was obviously commenting on hypocrisy.
Please go back to eating meat. Until you have your diet sorted out you will continue to sound incredibly stupid while overreacting to comments you don’t comprehend.
Also a tiny amount of an animal product can be present in packaged foods w/o being listed on the ingredients lists. It’s completely legal. Notice how you never see fly parts listed on the peanut butter labels? It’s because so long as it’s just a tiny amount(below a specific %, I forgot the # because it’s trivial), it’s legal for a company to package and sell said product, even label it as vegan, all natural, and good for you.

Okay people. It’s not just about flavor. Omnivores and vegetarians who don’t go vegan are clearly into mouth feel as much if not more than taste. Nothing chews like meat except for meat. Nothing gives the exact same flavor and feel as dairy, honey, and meat. Sorry it’s just just true.
For the record nothing tastes and feels like a perfectly fried chicken wing. Throw on some hot sauce and yum! Is it worth that kind of loot? For Phil Ivey yes. So effin’ what? His body, his money, his business.
Fact – he’s one of the top 10 players in the game and has been for over a decade.
Fact – none of you are Tom Dwan’s accountant or representatives of the IRS so it’s none of your business if he pays taxes on every single bet he wins. To suggest that he doesn’t is borderline slander.
Fact – Petco has been boycotted for animal cruelty. I do not have to be a PETA newsletter subscriber/pseudo-vegetarian hypocrite to know that it’s horrible to support Petco in any way. Their charity is a means for publicity and thus it should be boycotted in favor of completely non-profit animal rights organizations.
You may now return to your meals of hummus and celery.
