Miss Newfoundland Sarah Green. Anti-seal hunting group posted this doctored photo on Facebook.

An anti-seal hunting group posted a doctored photo of bloodied Miss Newfoundland, Sara Green on a Facebook page.

The photo was later removed, but Green is continuing to talk and voice her support for the hunt.

“It was gruesome. It was unnecessary … when I saw the photo, of course my jaw dropped,” Green said. “I couldn’t believe it, but it gave me a bigger motivation to stand up for the seal hunt.”

Green also stated she planned to join her grandfather and uncle during the upcoming seal hunt in the spring.

Camille Labchuk, a member of the Green Party of Canada’s federal council said, “No compassionate person can observe the seal kill and still support it. What it represents is an archaic industry that is going nowhere but downhill. Countries around the world are shutting their borders to seal products.”

Granted, the photo is gruesome looking. But so are pictures from the annual hunts.

Is this a case of activists going too far?

Or compassionate realists trying to expose the truth?

If it was so gruesome, then why won’t she stop supporting it? She said so herself that it was gruesome!!

  2. Lee-Ann Says:

I am from newfoundland, and i support the seal hunt. We hunt seal as a means of survival. Anyone who thinks that we are monsters for killing seals are no better for killing cow or pig, or buffalo for that matter. Some people even skin animals alive, and nothing is said about it. If you dont like it, then dont take part in it, but dont run your mouth about us. Its a way of life, and its all a part of the food chain

  3. Mark Says:

Yet another example of the insanity of the people who worship animals.

Get a life. Get a brain.

  4. Sandy B Says:

I’m originally from Newfoundland. We ate seal meat when I was a child. It’s part of our culture as well as being a way to supplement our food. It is not inhumane; they die quickly! And the whole seal is used, not just part of it with the remainder tossed away.

We used to have a vibrant cod fish industry. Now, the seals which are so abundant and so full of parasites eat much of what we would like to fish.

People’s energies should be focused on saving some of the many animals out there who are endangered. I don’t believe seals are anywhere close to that state yet.

  5. nick t Says:

to Rad_Rosa89 about your earlier coment i heard the interview with ms.green on the radio and i believe she was refering to the fact the someone doin this to a picture of her as grusome and not the seal hunt it self so befor you try to take a piece of our culture you should get the facts straight
and i am a very strong believer of the hunt and i find it very funny that its ok for the aboriginals of canadas north to kill the very ENDANGERED polar bears but its horrific for us to kill a few seals during the spring so maby all the people who dont support it should mind their own buisness or pay some attention to the things happening in the nothern parts of canada!

  6. JJMoore Says:

Good for you Sarah!!! Its about time someone had the guts to stand up for our Canadian Culture and not be intimidated by the do-gooders!! I’m totally in support of what you stand for…..and its GOOD!! You’re courageous!!

  7. JJMoore Says:

Funny thing people don’t crusade against the slaughter of Beef? How about the thousands of tons of fish that are harvested every year?…by the Seals?

  8. dan bouvier Says:

I agree , tell those Tree Huggers to move to Sable Island and HUG a Pony! I grew up in Churchill,Mb. Polar Bears are Very important. Hudson Bay Polar Bear Population is getting down in numbers. If and when the seals get low in population, then we worry about. Leave these people alone. Take up bingo or something , and waste someone else’s time. Or maybe they can find a rock to Hug if no tree available.

  9. bryan donovan Says:

Sara, you rock! dont let a bunch of ignorant hippys try and tell you whats right and whats wrong, you seem to have figured it out alot better than they!

  10. John Spragge Says:

Reality check: think about the pictures of pathetic waterfowl trying to swim while laden with toxic filth from Exxon Valdez or one of her many sisters. Now guess what they make polyester out of. Your “real people wear fake fur coat, or your polyester jacket ended up all over that poor duck, and a whole bunch of other waste products ended up in the hearts and livers and brains of many other animals, anmd a few humans. If you think of polyester as “humane”, then think. And maybe you’ll stop persecuting traditional and aboriginal cultures.

  11. michael M Says:

Seal meat on PETA bread MMMmmmm!!

  12. MR Says:

Let’s be sure to give jobs to only beautiful people .. ugly people don’t need jobs and we should nto stand up for ugly people. Wait that would be wrong.

So, let’s stand up for seals because they are so darn cute .. let’s not stand up for chickens or pigs or cows because they aren’t that cute after all.
Wait that too would be wrong.

Sarah Green is awesome! Aborginal people .. it’s time to unite and fend off this BS.

  13. tati Says:

Ew you people are heartless. We need to control the human population, why not kill humans too right?
ok if you eat seals (which is nasty) at least find other ways to kill them. Besides, unlike pigs and cows, seals are MURDERED in their natural habitat.
if you do it as a “sport” hey go murder your baby brothers and sisters that might be more fun =)

  14. anonymous7 Says:

THANK YOU TATI. my point exactly!

why don’t i do bludgeon every kid i see on the street and then skin them alive because the human population is getting too big? and who says no one cares about all the other poorly treated animals? i’m a vegetarian and i’m against all of that. but just because creatures are as poorly treated elsewhere, does not make it okay for you sickos to do the same! get a heart, goddammit. they still eat, breath and feel pain like humans, don’t they? it was tradition once to burn widowed wives, and kill people who were believed to be “witches.” does that make it okay? NO

  15. j2l4 Says:

Way to go Sara. Courage, ethics and community spirit.

PETA and other anti-sealers are racist and cultural imperialists who preach genocide.

  16. tati Says:

    To j2l4,
PETA has done a lot worldwide to protect animals and they have much support so they usually end up getting where they want.
European nations have stopped buying seal products and hopefully other nations would do so as well=)
Anyone interested in helping the seals? U can find info and campaign ideas at the PETA2 website ^^ [there’s also campaigns to help polar bears and other animals]
I`m sorry for all the old cranky people who want to keep their old cruel traditions but this is a new era and we as the new generation will make this a better place, not only for humans but for animals too !
P.s for anonymous 7: thanks , and apparently these people do not understand the importance of a LIFE

  17. Bryan Says:

hey Guys listen to sara Green , how she was so disgusted seeing her pic , but she supports the hunt, What does she think the slaughter looks like, The slaughter is a blood bath and nothing else , it;s a bunch of uneducated people that do not want to evolve in this world . Sara I think you are one ugly east coast young lady , O and sorry you don’t think you look good in blood red , I hope you have a great time with your family this spring clubbing helpless young seals so you can look cool in fur

  18. Ryan Says:

JJMoore, the seal hunt is NOT Canadian culture. Outside of Newfoundland (and the far North), the seal hunt is frowned upon.

The government would be better to give east coasters the $15 million it brings in annually or $5-10,000 per person.
The rest of Canada suffers more when other countries boycott products made in BC, Ontario, Alberta because of the seal slaughter.

j2l4, being a Newfoundlander is NOT a race. If one is against the seal hunt it doesn’t mean they hate the people of Newfoundland.

  19. Bea Elliott Says:

Guess it’s so! A picture’s worth a thousand words! Go Vegan!

  20. hornetag Says:

I am a member of PETA…..People Eating Tasty Animals! There’s room for all of God’s creatures……right next to the potatoes and green beans! You guys are complete idiots! So, I guess none of you women wear makeup? None of you wear leather shoes? Jackets? Give me a break people! God put us on the earth to be the top of the food chain! Next time you look in the mirror, open your mouth and you will see these sharp teeth called canines! The purpose of these teeth is for ripping and tearing of meat! If we weren’t supposed to eat meat then why in the hell do we have them! I’m a hunter and I dare a PETA member to come parading around my house pushing that bullshit down my throat!

  21. Bryan Says:

Hey hornetag , who says I don’t eat meat, I think it would be a great idea if you posted where you live you know address postal code , I wouldn’t want to get the wrong house , freedom of speech my friend freedom of speech , just for the record there are more people against the hunt (and yes a good percent of us eat meat) then the whole east coast put together , anyways my friend I am up for youe other

  22. wayne parsons Says:

Keep it up Sarah – right always wins ……..

If a person doesn’t eat meat, wear fur or leather then he/she can fill his/her boots in regards to protesting the seal hunt; but, if they do, than I would humbly suggest that they find the nearest dictionary and look up the word “hypocrite” and apply it to ones self.

  23. Anon Says:

Specism at its best. This is no different to deciding to club your dog or cat.

“It’s part of our culture”…right. Cannibalism is part of a few peoples “culture”, would you support that as well?

Humans are the worst of diseases.

  24. Bridget Curran Says:

Sara Green is being held up as the new poster-child of the commercial seal hunt when in truth she knows very little about it. For instance, during an interview she said the photoshopped image was the most gruesome and gory thing she’d ever seen. She seemed to forget that the blood and seal pup carcasses are photos from the commercial slaughter itself. She found it sickening to look at and was shocked at the gore yet she wholeheartedly supports it. She then said she was going to show her support for the commercial seal hunt by participating in it. Again, she’s confused. She doesn’t have a commercial license; if she had gone out to kill seals this year it would’ve been with a personal use license. Huge difference there.

Nobody is relying on the commercial seal hunt to survive. Killing seals is an off-season activity for fishermen. The small amount of income they derive could be earned from other ventures. Markets are shutting down and sealing is becoming less and less profitable. The majority of Canadians oppose the annual slaughter and object to their tax dollars being used to fund the atrocity. Yet the Canadian govt lavishes millions of our tax dollars on it. There are viable alternatives but the Canadian govt is so desperate to retain those all-important east coast fishers’ votes it is sacrificing the rest of Canada and our country’s reputation for a small amount of industry lobbying bullies.

I have witnessed and documented the commercial seal slaughter for the past four years and maintain that anyone with an ounce of compassion and common sense could never condone such cruelty.

  25. NewfieToTheBone Says:

Why is there so much commotion about the annual seal hunt ?

The reason I ask is because I hear so much about the seals but yet I hear nothing about Moose, Elk, Buffalo, Dear, Duck, Geese and Caribou. Oh and what about the Grizzly Bears, Cougars and Wolves that are hunted and only used for their hides…..

Seals are nothing but a rodent to the North Atlantic. Yes I agree the pups are really cute but they grow up the be one of the ugliest and wasteful animals known.

  26. Best Comment Ever!!! Says:

I LOVE THE SEAL HUNT!!!!!!! I also love reading all the comments left by misinformed people!

For the People who say: “Would you club a baby?”
I say: “If I could make a coat out them, I would!”
I’m joking on that one and all pro-sealers will probably find that one funny because they bother to learn the facts 🙂

  27. Sensible Says:

It would be silly for anyone who buys meat to criticize the seal hunters. Take beef for intstance. The plastic wrapped cut of meat you purchase for supper comes from an animal that has been separated from its parents, penned up, needled, fed hormones, fed what a human decides it will eat, not allowed to mate nor to run free, swim or select its fresh food. It senses the abbatoire and its imminent death and is killed for you.

A seal enjoys all of the above in freedom and is killed quicker than it would be by predators without knowing its coming.

    You choose!

  28. Laureen Says:

That is all we need, another seal basher. She is one sick, twisted little person. She is excited to join the hunt? Strange. She has no life experience, you do not know what goes on during the seal hunts. Think about it for a moment, would you like your baby (should you ever have one) bashed on the head and skinned in front of you? Do you not think for a moment that the seals do not know what you are doing to them? Same thing. Carma honey. I do not eat meat, or use products that are made from animals. I believe slaughterhouses for anything is cruel and barbaric period. The gases produced from cattle alone are heavy contributors that are depleting the ozone. The waste from pigs and cattle are soiling the great lakes in Ontario. We are so concerned about recycling, but no one stops to think that they should stop eating meat as that is a huge contributor to the destruction of our planet. Enjoy your steak!

  29. Laureen Says:

Newtothebone, speaking of ugly… has come around and bashed you on the head for being ugly? There are many human beings on this earth who are rodents (let us now insult the rodent), yet they are still around, it is okay to bash them on the head? Human beings are way too arrogant, and believe that they can go around and do whatever pleases them. We are done listening to all the whining that the sealers are doing. Enough!

  30. Anonymous Says:

The Canadian government should minimise this practice. It should be permitted only in isolated communities. Yes, kill and eat seals, but do it on the condition that you live in an igloo without modern conveniences.

  31. Kathy Cobb Says:

Those of you who support this barbaric, government-sanctioned bloodbath are a bunch of brain-dead idiots clinging to outdated customs. You spout propaganda about how it’s your way of life, and it’s how you survive. Yet, your comments show that many of you are misinformed about your own hunt.

Seal hunting is simply something you have grown up with, have accepted, and is part of your culture. Just because something is part of your culture doesn’t mean it doesn’t need to be changed. Most of you are too brainwashed to consider whether or not it is cruel. All you care about are your rights, your needs. Only weak-minded people do something because that is the way it has always been. It takes courage and a greatness of mind to go against what you grew up with.

To Sensible: You need to educate yourself before speaking. The seals are not killed quickly and many are still alive while being skinned. Learn the facts of your own hunt. You see what you want to see; not what is. Seal hunters have been photographed killing with glee and being excessively cruel. Many laugh and taunt the onlookers. So, this is not a quick kill with no suffering. It is a slaughter in the true sense of the word.

To Mark: Part of having a brain (and a heart) is to use it. Your statement shows that perhaps, you should put down the bong, and notice that we share this planet with other species. Just because we are humans does not give us the right to do whatever we please, to whomever we please, whenever we please. People like you are why animal groups are necessary. You have a sense of entitlement. Your apathy is sickening.

j2l4: If your ethics say that it’s ok to bash a seal’s head in for ANY reason, least of all, monetary, then perhaps, you should read the definition of “ethics.” It does not mean what you think it means.

JJMoore: Educate yourself and learn to read. There are many groups who campaign against cruelty to cows, pigs, and many other animals. However, we are discussing the Seal Hunt. And since when is courage defined as hacking up defenseless animals who can’t fight back?

Lee-Ann: If it looks like a monster and acts like a monster, it’s a monster. Don’t expect to behave like a barbarian then whine because no one likes you.

To the rest of you: When you can’t defend your stance based on the facts and all you do is finger point, you lose the argument. Yes, horrible things are happening to many animals. What is your point? Does that make the seal hunt any less cruel? No.

As for Miss Newfoundland . . . she is not shocked by the seal hunt. But she is shocked by a photo- shopped image of herself covered in blood and surrounded by seal carcasses? Seriously? She should feel right at home.

One last thing. Why is it that you Seal Hunt supporters cannot write or spell?

Perhaps, you should come in off the blood-soaked ice and educate yourselves.
