After a battle with Lupus, the woman who inspired the Beatles song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”, Lucy Vodden, has passed at the age of 46.

Lucy was a childhood friend of Julian Lennon, the oldest son of John Lennon and John’s first wife, Cynthia Lennon.

Julian painted a picture of Lucy with diamond shaped eyes and brought the picture home from school and told John, “That’s Lucy in the sky with diamonds,” inspiring the song which appeared on the 1967 album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Although John Lennon was a vegetarian, Julian hasn’t taken after dad in his diet.

One fan commented on Facebook about this and said:

“Jules, I was really surprised to find out that you are not a vegetarian especially since I know how much you express compassion towards the environment. However, I fully respect your decision, but it would be really cool if you could just take a minu…te to think about this issue and have a quick look at this website which lists some very good reasons why being veggie really does make a huge difference environmentally. Thank you for your consideration 🙂 I leave the last words to a truly great hero of mine:

“If anyone wants to save the planet, all they have to do is just stop eating meat. That’s the single most important thing you can do” – Paul McCartney.”

That’s incredibly sad. A very beautiful story on how the song was created, though.

I think Sean Lennon is vegetarian, though.

Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr were and are the only vegetarians in the Beatles. George and John were not !

Actually John was veggie, but sometimes off and on during the 60s because Yoko made him do it. They weren’t very strict about it and John sometimes ate meat, but he tried to live vegetarian and even made a statement that it was the best way to go.

He talked about being worried about getting protein and in the 1980 he and Yoko ate macrobiotic.

Oh my gosh….George was, in fact, a very devout vegetarian through his last day on this earth. He did not eat any meat and did not allow meat to be cooked or served in his home.
