Alyson Hannigan Pregnancy Turned Her Vegan To Meat And Cheese

When several women in the same group get pregnant, it’s joked there’s “something in the water.” When several vegetarian or vegan women start craving and eating meat during pregnancy, could it be something in the belly?
Alyson Hannigan, who plays Lily on “How I Met Your Mother” revealed to US Magazine that she used to be a vegan, but now that she’s pregnant she craves meat and cheese. And gives into the cravings.
Joining the likes of Jennifer Connolly, Brooke Shields, and other celebrity women stating pregnancy induced meat cravings, Hannigan said, “I basically went from being a vegan to… now it’s meat and cheese — and ginger ale! Ginger ale, I love. Apparently, my mom craved ginger ale when she was pregnant with me! Maybe it’s a hereditary thing. But, yeah, I didn’t eat any meat or cheese before – now I have to.”
What do you feel about the allege “cravings” women get for meat during pregnancy? A legitimate phenomena? Or are they craving certain nutrients instead? Wouldn’t a Boca Burger do the same trick?

Hmm, that’s interesting. But it is not uncommon for some appetite change during pregnancy. Some cravings are simply the result of mom’s needs for additional calories during pregnancy.

I’ve been a semitarian (pesco-lacto-ovo) for over 6 years and I hope that when/if I’m pregnant, I can keep it up. I can definitely understand the struggle with food cravings, especially when you have a life that depends on you. I attempted the vegan diet, but gave into my cravings for food that had dairy/eggs in them. More power to all the women attempting to have a vegetarian/vegan pregnancy!

@ Brenda. Oh that sounds so sad ! 🙁 if it’s that’s bad, give in for one time, and remember all the days that you DIDN”T give in. So you are not “perfect” but still very good, eh. 😉 One step backwards, and than again two steps fortwards. 🙂

it’s easy to say its’s “lame” or that “it’s sad” when you’re not the one who is experiencing the cravings and aversions and the sicknesses associated with being pregnant. i was vegan before my pregnancy and my food palate completely changed to the point that i had no control over what i could and couldn’t stomach. if i was vomiting in the morning and barely able to keep food down yet my body craved chicken tacos, then chicken tacos it will be!

I am a pescatarian and now pregnant am craving meat. I give in if I crave it and stop feeling weak that way. I feel like my body needs it. it stops me from feeling so incredibly sick ( I have had 24/7 nausea). I hate it that it does make me feel so much better, but it is what it is. I do buy biological though. My conscience rattles me constantly. All power to those who don’t crave meat and don’t feel sick without it when pregnant but that is not my case.
Funnily enough I saw this article a while ago and thought – that’s so crap, but now I’m in the same position I totally understand and feel like a hypocrite.
