Sugarland Guitarist Thad Beaty Is A Vegan Marathoner

Thad Beaty, guitarist for the country rock group Sugarland, had a wake-up call several years ago.
Both his mother and the band’s music technician were diagnosed with cancer, the tech succumbing to the disease in 2012.
Beaty himself was suffering from high cholesterol with significant weight gain to accompany it.
A vegan diet sounded like music to his ears.
He trained for his first marathon in between several dozen shows on the road with Sugarland and adopted a strict, plant-based diet to help him keep up his energy.
He went from 230 to a very lean 160 pounds and has since gotten involved with Music That Moves, an organization that helps musicians and those in the industry stay healthy and in shape.
“We need to figure out how to give back,” Beaty said. “It’s our job to get involved not only in our health but in the lives of the people that we tour with and the lives of the communities we’re fortunate enough to be able to go into and play shows.”
“The goal is to get the music community to be inspired beyond just the stage—to change lives across the board.”
When he’s not burning calories dancing and playing on stage, Beaty can be found swimming laps at the YMCA and cycling.
