“Businessweek” Predicts Hummus Is The Next Salsa

Sabra hummus is the official dip of the National Football League, and according to a recent article in Businessweek, the trend of the chickpea dip picking up popularity among sports enthusiasts, party goers and snackers alike may make it surpass salsa as the most common and easiest convenient food to obtain and serve.
The article discusses PepsiCo’s recent campaign with the NFL that produced a television commercial encouraging Americans to “dip life to the fullest,” and use it on many traditional game time foods like potato chips and chicken wings.
Hummus is still selling at a rate of about half that of salsa, but as Ronen Zohar, the CEO behind the PepsiCo’s hummus campaign says, it’s just a matter of giving more and more people a taste before they’re hooked.
“Most of the people in the U.S. never tasted hummus,” Zohar said. “You have to change their mind-set that even if the name is strange and the brown color of the hummus is not as appetizing, it tastes wonderful.”
About 18% of American households have purchased hummus, the majority of them being on the East coast, followed by the Midwest and the South.
