A public school in Queens has become the first ever to offer an entirely vegetarian menu to its students.

Children at PS 244 elementary can now take advantage of lunches containing items such as roasted chickpeas, braised black beans with plantains, tofu veggie wraps, vegetarian chili and roasted tofu with Asian sesame sauce thanks to a partnership with the New York Coalition for Health School Food, a non-profit dedicated to “introducing plant-based foods and nutrition education in schools.”

Chancellor Dennis Walcott recently paid a visit to the cafeteria himself to sample the day’s menu: black bean and cheddar quesadillas with salsa and red roasted potatoes and broccoli.

“I am proud of the students and staff for trailblazing this extraordinary path,” Walcott said. “Our school meals program has evolved under the Bloomberg Administration to offer dishes that meet our nutritional standards. I want to thank the Office of SchoolFood and the New York Coalition for Healthy School Food for working collaboratively to create vegetarian meals.”

This healthy food wave is not something being pushed onto the students like extra homework over a three day weekend.

According to principal Robert Groff, veggie meals are the new electives.

“We discovered early on that our kids were gravitating toward our vegetarian offerings, and we kept expanding the program to meet the demand,” Groff said in a statement.
