Quantcast Vegetarian StarLauren Bush Stays True To Her Jeans With Slow, Eco-Friendly Fashion

If you’re a Texan, what character of the state do you most associated yourself with?

Probably not the steakhouses, but that’s okay, because you’re in good company, as Lauren Bush says being Texan may have more to do with what you put on your body and not in it.

“I love jeans and denim — I think that’s probably my most stereotypically Texan trait,” the co-founder of FEED Projects, a non-profit designed to help fund UN programs for hunger around the world.

If you’re a true greenie, you’ll want to grab a pair of organic denim jeans, since it takes almost 2/3 of a pound of pesticide to produce one pair of conventional ones. Everything should be bigger in Texas, but not the carbon footprint!

So where does Lauren eat in Houston to avoid the steakhouses?

Where the Italian and Mexican dishes come sin carne!

“I grew up going to Molina’s and Carrabba’s. I’m a vegetarian so I tend to stay away from barbecue. I love that little place in River Oaks with the garden — Tiny Boxwood’s — so pretty!”

Speaking of clothing eco-friendliness, Lauren compares her fashion line, Lauren Pierce, to the slow food movement, because every item is hand dyed and treated with unique care versus factory produced.

“You know how there’s a slow food movement? There’s also starting to be a slow fashion movement, so each piece is truly hand-dyed hand-touched, not at all a mass-produced product, so each piece is truly unique and more special, and there’s a social benefit supporting these local, traditional dyeing practices, plus everything is eco-friendly.”
