Just because all supermodels get nose jobs doesn’t mean they should require Rhinos to get them too.

Reports from Celebitchy say Elle MacPherson has angered animal rights activists after an interview with the Times Online revealed she takes Chinese medicine made from crushed and grounded rhinoceros horns. And these nose jobs don’t come with anesthetic, we assure you.

Times Online: You’re said to be a great fan of Chinese medicine. What does powdered rhino horn taste like?
EP: A little bit like crushed bone and fungus in a capsule. Does the job though.

Times Online: How do you know that it works? A lot of people say Chinese medicine is quackery.
EP: Put it this way, works for me.

Apparently Elle hasn’t learned her lesson from her last encounter with activists for wearing fur.

Mongabay has chimed in on the sad news, citing that using rhino horn for such practices is the exact cause of the decline and, in the case of 4 species of rhinos, extinction.

“Despite a number of scientific studies showing that rhino horn has no curative properties, supermodel, entrepreneur, and recent host of Britain’s Next Top Model, Elle Macpherson, says she ingests powdered rhino horn because: “[it] works for me”. Poaching hit a 15-year-high last year to keep up with demand for rhino horn. Poachers usually shoot or tranquilize the animal before sawing off its horn. Rhinos often die from bleeding to death.”

What’s equally bad is that, like many illegal business practices that yield large amounts of money, obtaining rhino horn is dangerous for the people involved. Mongabay says a park ranger in India was gunned down by poachers just last month.

More, including a heartwrenching photo of a rhino who’s horn has been sawed off, at Mongabay.

Today I read a news item that reported that the last adult rhino of South Africa has been slaughtered for its horn, letting it bleed to death.

There is no evidence that rhino horn has any significant effect, much less one that can’t be achieved with better medicine that incidentally does not require to brutally slaughter entire species of wildlife.
TCM is superstitious fraud, and it needs to stop.

Go visit a TCM practitioner or a book review, and tell them where to shove it.
