Quantcast Vegetarian StarDaiya Cheese “Crack For Vegans” Not Widely Available In Canada

Alex Jamieson, the wife of Morgan Spurlock, filmmaker who ate nothing but McDonald’s three times a day for his documentary Super Size Me, might be caught sneaking mouthfuls of something you won’t find at the burger giant several times a day.

According to Macleans, the woman who starred as herself in Spurlocks’s 2004 film as Healthy Chef Alex called the new Daiya vegan cheese, “crack for vegans.”

The story at Macleans details the rising popularity of the vegan cheese that, although created by two Canadians, surprisingly, can’t be found in Canada and you won’t believe the reason why.

“There were label considerations in Canada,” said co-creator Greg Blake. “We’re not allowed to say the word cheese. We can’t say alternative cheese. We can’t say vegan cheese. I’ve been meaning to learn the whole story but I’ve been too busy making fake cheese.”

Uh-oh. Could Canada’s cheese industry have the rights to the name, much like U.S. dairy producers want to banish the word soymilk?

Hang in there Canadian vegan friends. Your time is coming.

Blake promises the cheese, or, uh, fake stuff that tastes, looks and melts like cheese, but isn’t the prohibited word over there, is coming to Canada soon.
