PETA Makes Appearance At Michael Jackson’s Memorial

You will probably never attend a memorial service where the guests dress like this.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals made an appearance at Michael Jackson’s memorial service and took the opportunity to promote vegetarianism with a sign that read, “Go Vegetarian For The Man In The Mirror.”
The pop star was vegetarian, and the group is currently trying to get permission to use a song he sang for a movie, “Ben,” to educate people on the conditions of rodents in research laboratories.
“Ben” features Michael singing about a boy’s love for his pet rat.

I like this, but I’m confused: I recall several references over the years about MJ being vegetarian, but one of the most poignant stories told about him during the Memorial was by Magic Johnson, and it involved Magic ordering grilled chicken from Michael’s personal chef, and then being served that grilled chicken while was served a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken — which he claims they sat on the floor and ate while they discussed Magic’s role in one of Michael’s music videos…
How long, exactly, was Michael a vegetarian? Was it on again off again?
