Quantcast Vegetarian StarVegan Poker Great Daniel Negreanu Won’t Endorse McDonald’s

Hmmm…says Daniel Negreanu. Who should I endorse next? Boca Burgers-maybe, Poker VT-definitely, McDonald’s-heck NO!

Canadian Poker Champion Daniel Negreanu has earned great success at many professional poker events, including the World Series of Poker Events. He’s also appeared on Late Night Poker, Poker After Dark, and High Stakes Poker.  Oh, and he’s been a vegan since 2003.

A star such as this obviously will have endorsement moguls banging at the door, but Negreanu won’t hand over his chips to just any company. And he’ll never forget the job he’s there to do.

“I’m a vegan, so obviously I won’t do a McDonald’s ad,” Negreanu said. “The main thing is to continue to do the best I can at poker.”

I’ve known for a while that Negreanu was a vegan. Before I discovered this fact he was already my favorite poker player. Discovering this made me like him even more. But what I’ve always wondered is whether he’s a vegan for his own health, or because he’s against the use and abuse of animals. I haven’t been able to find this information anywhere; but since I’ll be traveling to Vegas next weekend and staying for 4 days at the Bellagio (home to perhaps the most popular poker room in the universe) I just might run into Daniel, and I just might ask him myself. Looking forward to meeting him. He seems like a very nice guy. A GOOD guy! And a guy who respects his health. So his answer could go either way. Care to make any wagers???

Don’t know, but I have read that his mom still makes his lunches when he’s doing tournaments. I just thought that was funny.

Yes, I’ve read that too. Hey, I just rediscovered this chain of comments almost 4 months later, and I still don’t know the answer. I was just at the Commerce Casino in LA a few weekends ago. That place was swarming with poker celebrities. I guess I could have asked any one of these people: Chris Ferguson, Jennifer Harmon, Gavin Smith, Phil Laak, Mike Sexton, Michael Mizrachi (although that guy scares me). Yeah, it was a real who’s who. Kind of surreal. I highly recommend it. … Then you can hit the sports bar for some vegetarian enchiladas.

Well, here I am six and a half years later, and I still don’t know the answer! I actually met Negreanu a few years ago. He was in the middle of a tournament, but standing by the rails for a minute. I went and and thanked him for all the inspiration. He shook my hand and said, “Cheers, Buddy.” But it didn’t occur to me to ask the reason for his vegan lifestyle.

Okay, I finally just found the answer, straight from the vegan’s mouth… “My bank balance was healthy but my guts weren’t—I knew something had to give. I didn’t want to blame the alcohol so I decided it must be the meat that didn’t make me feel good and in 2000, I became a vegetarian.”

Further down in the article… “…although my veganism started out absolutely about health, it’s also become about the environment and animal cruelty.”
