Help Rory Freedman Match PETA Donations For Mother’s Day

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, May 8th, 2009 in Authors.

Gretchen Ryans Little Pretty Exhibition OpeningThe world’s most famous Skinny Bitch, isn’t stingy when it comes to causes she cares about.

Rory Freedman, co-author of the famous Skinny Bitch series, has offered to donate $5,000 to peta2 in her mother’s honor, but only if you help her out.

Rory will match donations, dollar for dollar, up to $5,000 for every bit you donate to Peta2.

Let’s say you found a machined washed $10 bill in your winter coat after giving it the final cleaning for the season. Like Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers would say, “Give it away, give it away, give it away now.” Rory will donate her $10 (although maybe not as washed out and wrinkled) to match your money!

Mother’s Day doesn’t last year round and neither does this donation challenge. You have three days to dig those coins from the couch cushions.

Visit the Facebook cause page to donate now!

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, May 8th, 2009 in Actresses, Food & Drink, Recipes.

2009 Heart Of Green Awards
We told you a long time ago that Alicia Silverstone likes her balls raw, but another raw food staple she enjoys is Nori.

Although her vegan diet book, The Kind Diet, isn’t set to debut until the fall, Alicia just couldn’t wait to spill the vegan refried beans to Fitsguar.com about some of the recipes in it.

“One of the recipes in my book is leftover nori (a type of seaweed) wraps,” Silverstone said. “Anything in the fridge I want to use up, I shove into nori. It’s delicious.”

“It makes your skin look amazing and your hair really strong.”

Yep, Nori is full of good for you stuff like calcium, iron, and magnesium. You can make yourself some awesome veggie sushi or wrap it up and stuff it with veggies and dressing.

And who doesn’t like eating like a star?

If you have a good idea for using Nori or any other seaweed, you know the drill. You must speak now!

The 15th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - Arrivals

Mother’s Day is just around the corner and you slackers better head to the mall quick.

Even if your mom isn’t the best in the world, she still deserves some love this weekend as she can’t possibly be worst than the television mothers featured at televisionwithoutpity.com.

They’ve compiled a top 10 list of TV’s worst moms and Desperate Housewive’s Marcia Cross‘ character, Bree Van De Kamp is on the list.

Bree has a rap sheet longer than Bernard Madoff’s scam list of evil mommy deeds, including going against her daughter’s wishes and forcing her vegan grandchild to eat a hot dog.

Yep, that definitely marks her off our Hallmark and FTD list. No vegan chocolates either. She’s lucky if she gets a phone call. And even that will be collect.

Other bad mommies of the year star in Prison Break, Heroes, Gossip Girl, and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Can you guess who they are? Visit televisionwithoutpity.com to find out!

BoKU Superfoods, the same company that gave away vegan Earth Day goodies to stars like Ellen DeGeneres, is giving several celebrity moms, including Jessica, a package filled with organic, kosher, and vegan goodies.

“When people consume a diet filled with super nutrient-dense foods, they can maximize their genetic potential for health and well-being,” said B?KU™ Master Formulator, Dr. BJ Adrezin. “B?KU™ Super Food is formulated to give people a potent boost in the right direction.”

Other celeb moms selected to receive their superboost are Angelina Jolie, Tori Spelling, Nicole Richie, Camila Alve, Gwen Stefani, Minnie Driver, Rebecca Romijn and Ashlee Simpson-Wentz.

Oprah Winfrey arrives at Alvin Ailey 50th Anniversary Opening Night PerformanceIf you haven’t heard already, Oprah Winfrey has both shocked and angered animal rights activists across the nation by teaming up with Kentucky Fried Chicken to offer free chicken dinners to every home in America.

KFC is on the “naughty” and not “nice” list with organizations like PETA, due to the way the chickens it uses are treated.

Now, we can add one more sin Oprah is contributing to now that she’s signed a pact with the Colonel devil: swine flu.

Jane Velez-Mitchell and Dr. Gregor of the HSUS said it best: the conditions in factory farms like the ones KFC chickens are kept in are the hub for breeding diseases.

Brian Merchant at Treehugger.com has this to say on the matter:

“I was dismayed to hear that Oprah was helping to push KFC’s free chicken promotion. Wasn’t quite sure why, initially—after all, ‘free food for everyone’ is generally a pretty positive notion. But then I recalled that KFC buys its chicken from Tyson—one of the US’s biggest factory farmers and perpetrator of shady health practices. And then I remembered that Oprah herself did an expose on the cruelty of factory farms , essentially condemning them. And then I realized that the ploy couldn’t have come at a worse time: US factory farms have been confirmed to have played a role in the origin of swine flu.”

“The point isn’t that Oprah screwed up–it’s that we should all be more aware of the practices that lead to the food on our table (or in the takeout window).”

Now, vegan Bones’ star Emily Deschanel is throwing some love to Chloe’s website on late night television.

On a recent episode of Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, Deschanel gave the shout out:

“My favorite website that I can’t live without is GirlieGirlArmy.com because it has fashion and eco-fashion and a recipe every week. They send out a newsletter so you can find out what’s going on. That’s the one I love.”

Stella McCartney’s Time 100 Meal Delves Into Mushroom Inner Life

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, May 8th, 2009 in Fashion, Food & Drink.

Times 100 Most Influential People In The WorldThe recipients of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People gathered together for dinner recently at Time Warner center.

Vegetarian fashion designer Stella McCartney was present and of course needed some adaptions from the standard fare served.

KFSM.com reported on this in a somewhat sarcastic way.

“The only star who asked for anything was designer Stella McCartney. She’s famously vegan and could not, would not, consume the lovely steak fillet. So a “special” vegetarian plate was done up for Stella. It looked exactly like everybody else’s meal. Except hers was a cleverly disguised Portobello mushroom. She was not shunned or mocked by the carnivores at her table. But, she could feel morally superior. (Then again, what do we really know about the inner-life of a mushroom?)”

Shunned or mocked? Oh, please. Stella McCartney could eat grass at the dinner table and no one would turn a head.

Other notables who attended the event were Barbara Walters, Anne Coulter, and Michelle Obama

Barbara Walters Taking Own Veggie Burgers To The White House

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, May 8th, 2009 in Food & Drink, TV Hosts.

Times 100 Most Influential People In The WorldBarbara Walters may soon be added to the list of favorite vegetarian TV hosts.

Green gossip website Ecorazzi.com received a tip from a fan who stated Walters announced she was seriously thinking about going vegetarian. Walters was prompted by a story about a cow named Molly who escaped a New York slaughterhouse.

“This morning on the View Barbara Walters brought up the topic of the Cow Molly that had escaped a slaughterhouse in NY yesterday. She said that was the reason she is more and more leaning towards vegetarianism. She also stated that she is scheduled to go to a White House dinner and she plans on bringing her own veggie burgers.”

Way to go, Barb! We seriously hope she follows through with this decision and sticks with it.

On an even happier note, the escaped cow was not sent back to slaughter, but instead transferred to an animal sanctuary in Suffolk county.

Maybe Barbara will pay her inspiration a visit and share some greens for lunch one day!
