Christopher Drummond is a celebrity makeup artist who’s prettied the faces of people like Jennifer Lopez and Kimora Lee Simmons. His line of lipsticks, concealor and other cosmetics (including a set for men) are free of known toxic ingredients, not tested on animals and vegan. He even opted not to use animal hair in makeup brushes, stating, “a lot of women are allergic to animal hair brushes. They think it’s the makeup, but it’s the brush.”

Thank goodness for Drummond’s natural approach, because a non-toxic lipstick may be hard to find as an FDA study found lead, a neurotoxin, on 22 very popular brands of lip colors.

The highest levels of lead were found in products by Cover Girl, Revlon and L’Oreal. And while the FDA says the levels of lead are not a threat to health, other consumer groups aren’t buying it.

Houma Today reports the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is calling for the FDA to reduce levels of lead to the same acceptable amount as that found in candy, since studies suggest the average woman consumes over 4 pounds of lipstick in her lifetime from licking her lips, eating food and drinking.

“The reason we’re worried is that lead builds up in the body over time,” said Stacy Malkan, representative from Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, who believes the problem lies in how the companies source ingredients. “Even small levels of lead, recent science shows, is dangerous at any level to developing children.

Florida’s Department of Health report on lead poisoning agrees.

“There is no safe level of lead in blood.”

Not only does Drummond try to source organic ingredients as much as possible, he also refrains from using any irritants found in other traditional makeup like titanium dioxide, zinc oxide and bismuth oxycholoride.
