The Simpsons turn Angolan for Africas DStv

Britain’s Department of Health is sponsoring three months of The Simpsons on Britain’s Channel 4 to help teach people about healthy lifestyles.

Huh?

Homer Simpson eating donut after donut isn’t exactly the paradigm of healthy living, but health officials believe the family has enough “healthy” elements and mass appeal to teach a lesson everyone could be reminded of to control obesity.

“The Simpsons are a much-loved, close-knit family facing some of the everyday challenges that modern-day families go through,” said Gillian Merron, public health minister. “They provide a popular and engaging way to get the message to real-life families about simple ways of improving their diet and activity for a healthier lifestyle.”

Like Lisa Simpson, the vegetarian. From the Times Online:

“Bart’s sister, Lisa, is a vegetarian and is likely to consume the daily target of five portions of fruit and vegetables.”

Also, Bart usually gets his recommended 60 minutes of exercise daily, whether it’s through skateboarding or vigorously trying to free himself from Homer’s choke grasp.

The department recognizes that not all the Simpsons’ lifestyle patterns and behaviors are healthy and this is reflected in the slogan: “Supporting The Simpsons: Sometimes.”

At the beginning of each episode, viewers will see the traditional Simpson gathering on the couch like the picture above, with junk food in their hands. Then, the junk food will disappear and be replaced with wholesome nutritional food like fresh produce.

Hmm…Is this an opportunity for the cat and dog to try veg?

Jane Velez-Mitchell Gone To The Vegan Dogs?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, October 5th, 2009 in Food & Drink, Journalists.

20th Annual GLAAD Media Awards - New York City

Much veggie ado is taking place on Jane Velez-Mitchell‘s Facebook.

A fan recently asked Jane, a vegan, if she was thinking of bringing her dogs over to that side, too.

“Hey Jane, I was just wondering, since you own Chihuahuas and your a vegetarian, do you have your dogs eating “meat-free” dog food? There are such products for dogs and cats of owners that are vegans, but dogs and cats are naturally meat eaters, so I think its bad to their health to restrict meat from their diet. What do you think?”

A vegetarian Chihuahua?

Yo quiero comida sin carne!

Lots of pet owners, including celebrities like Alicia Silverstone, Shahid Kapoor, and Paul McCartney, have put their dogs and cats on vegetarian diets, with special attention being paid to cats since it’s essential to have food that contains taurine, found mainly in chicken.

But vegan dog and cat food exists.

Have you made your pet go veg?

Did Whiskers enjoy the new meatless dish or did he develop a Goode Family dog Che syndrome?

George W. Bush Affirms Vegan Religion: Let Us All Worship Seitan

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, October 5th, 2009 in Food & Drink, Humor, Politicians.

George W. Bush Gives His First Post-Presidency Speech

George W. Bush recently gave a speech at Lubbock Christian University, where he confirmed what every vegan loves to hear: They are free to worship seitan.

Bush said Americans should be able to worship any religion they like and began naming a few before he said “vegan,” getting a roar of laughter from the audience.

“No one should say I’m more American than you by their faith,” Bush added. “I don’t know how to be president without faith,” he continued and then discussed how he was touched by people who often told him they were praying for him.

Bush’s niece, Lauren Bush, is a member of the vegetarian congregation.

Who knew George W. had such a great sense of humor?

Rock A Little, Feed Alot Benefit Concert - Arrivals

Christina Applegate visited Kansas City in the Power & Light district, in celebration of Lee Jeans’ National Denim Day, the company’s biggest all day fundraiser for breast cancer.

Applegate, a breast cancer survivor herself, helped unfurl a check with 10 other survivors she called her “sisters in boobs” for $4.5 million.

Kansas City is nicknamed “cowtown” and a reporter for kansascity.com asked the vegetarian Applegate if she could live in such a town that’s famous for barbecue and steaks.

“I don’t know. Probably. I’ve lived in a big city, I’ve lived in the mountains,” Applegate said.

Q: But you wouldn’t eat the cows.

A: I would love them and protect them.

Q:…So I guess we don’t appeal to you on those grounds (eating barbecue and steak).

A:Not necessarily on that front, but the people are very kind. And it looks like a nice little city. And I can play “Kansas City” on the guitar.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, btw. If you haven’t touched a tit yet, now’s a great time to get started.

Heather Mills V Bites The Bronx Opening [Update]

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, October 4th, 2009 in Business, Chefs, Food & Drink, Restaurants.

Heather Mills Launches V-Bites Restaurant

Update: V  Bites The Bronx isn’t here yet.

Vegan foodies in the U.S. will be glad to hear that Heather Mills has opened a V Bites restaurant in the Bronx, New York.

This comes just months after the grand opening of V Bites in Hove Lagoon in the UK.

Heather personally was present at the opening yesterday afternoon.

Heather’s no stranger to the area, as she’s worked with a charity of hers, Hunts Point Alliance, serving underprivileged Bronx children and families.

Last year, Heather donated over a million dollars of vegan food to children and families in the Bronx area and has also taught weekend cooking classes.

It was rumored months ago that Heather was looking in the NY area to open her vegan restaurant, but after V Bites in the UK opened its doors, many assumed Heather was done for awhile.

Thank goodness she’s like the vegan Energizer Bunny and shows no signs of stopping.

Jason Mraz Fish Taco Sins Revealed

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, October 4th, 2009 in Food & Drink, Male Musicians, Male Singers, Not So Vegetarian.

Jason Mraz Performs On NBC's "Today"

So back when Jason Mraz called himself a vegan fishitarian, we wondered if Jason really did sneak some occasional fish or was attempting another one of his sarcastic remarks.

We feared the worst, and it’s true. According to sfgate.com, Jason remains vegan for most of the time, but gives in to flipper ever now and then.

Q: Do you ever give into temptation and microwave a convenience store bacon cheeseburger?

A: No, I never give in. Only when I’m home in San Diego. That’s when you might find me pulling in for a fish taco.

Ah, the disappointment!

Jason’s diet for the other 99% of the time is convenient as it saves him the hassle of prep time on the road.

“My food is mostly raw vegan. You don’t have to cook too much when you’re in that world. So I might steam some quinoa, and then everything else is just fresh produce. Otherwise you’re eating truck-stop food, which is no bueno.”

Jason Mraz and the fish taco. Russell Simmons and his occasional egg noodles. Are there any good 100% real vegan men standing?
