Manny Ramirez Needs Veggie Viagra To Hit Home Run With Ladies

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, May 13th, 2009 in Athletes-Games-Sports.

Manny Ramirez Suspended 50 for DopingMajor league baseball player Manny Ramirez has been suspended for failing a drug test that indicated the presence of female fertility drug HCG-something often taken by athletes to counteract the effects of withdrawing from steroids like shrinking testicles and sperm count.

Yep, that means Manny may not be able to make it to home base with the ladies until that he gets that girly drug out of his system.

If anyone is going to call someone out for suspected impotence, you know it’s got to be PETA.

The group is urging Ramirez to get on “Veggie Viagra” quick, as a diet high in plant based protein and without saturated animal fat could give him better performance results without drugs and is less likely to result in the blockage of blood flow to the, ahem, essential organs.

“On behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), I’m writing to offer a suggestion that may help you reclaim the nickname “Man-Ram.” To obtain the kind of stamina that you’re looking for—without the use of any performance-enhancing drugs that can get you banned from baseball—use “vegetarian Viagra,” a diet full of whole grains, beans, lentils, green vegetables, fresh fruits, nuts, and more. And a vegetarian diet will help to unblock the arteries to all your vital organs.”

“So, Manny, get your big stick back in the game by going vegetarian.”

Read PETA’s entire letter to Manny.

Jimmy Kimmel Disses Pork: Living Veggie Life On The Down Low?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, May 13th, 2009 in TV Hosts, Videos.

2008 American Music Awards Nominations AnnouncedThere’s something sexy about a man who dates a woman who orders spaghetti without the meatballs. Just wish we could have know what he ate that night, but it probably wasn’t pork.

Jimmy Kimmel recently gave pork the thumbs down in the New York Times, citing the association with meat and diseases.

“The government does not want us to call it the swine flu. They’re calling it the 2009 H1N1 virus. The reason for the change is they want people to know you can still eat all the pork you want without any risk to your health, except diabetes, obesity, and heart disease.”

Ouch! Jimmy telling it like it is!

He’s not known for being a vegetarian yet, but could this talk show host who has an on/off relationship with Sarah Silverman more than some flexitarians give up then eat meat again be heading in that direction?

According to Ecorazzi.com, Kimmel has ran a couple of humorous videos that the Meat industry might record in response to vegetarian PSAs, like this one below.

We think Jimmy has to at least be doing some part time veggie lovin’!

Alicia Silverstone Couldn’t Stomach Eating Dog Or Any Other Animal

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, May 13th, 2009 in Actresses.

Stormbreaker - UK Film PremiereAlicia Silverstone has opened up about her early vegetarian days.

According to Starpulse.com, the actress tried being veg at age eight, but cheated from time to time until she got a little older and was able to think about where her food was coming from. After she realized meat came from animals just like the dogs she helped rescue, the vegan deal was signed.

“I started thinking, ‘Why am I saving one animal and still eating steak? How can I love these creatures so much… and keep eating meat?’ Ultimately I thought that if I wasn’t ready to eat a dog, I shouldn’t be eating meat at all.”

Why do you think we’ve become so accepting of eating some animals and not others? Is it the cute factor? Or a cultural thing?

Brendan Brazier Wants $35 Hamburgers

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, May 13th, 2009 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Food & Drink.

brendan_brazier1

Triathlete and ultra-marathoner Brendan Brazier took a break from mixing up his own invented vegan protein shakes and baking his nutritional bars to talk to the Vegetarian Times.

Brendan has testified before Congress about health and nutrition on more than one occasional and thinks we need to make healthy, plant based food less expensive and more convenient.

Although it’s much cheaper and easier to fill up on beef jerkies, boxed fried chicken, and soda pop if you’re on a budget, there’s one way to make it easier to afford healthy food-just jack the price of crappy food up.

“Meat and dairy are highly subsidized,” Brendan said. “A hamburger could cost $35 to produce but only cost $1.50 at a fast food restaurant because of farm subsidies. I’ve been advocating for a system where meat would cost more and local organic fruit and vegetable growers could get subsidies to bring their price down.”

A $35 hamburger would probably turn 90% of the world at least part time vegetarian. Now how about a $35 chicken leg?

Pick up the May/June issue of Vegetarian Times to read the entire interview with Brendan.

Rory Freedman Talks Birth Of A Skinny Bastard With The Veg Star

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, May 13th, 2009 in Authors, Interviews.

Gretchen Ryans Little Pretty Exhibition OpeningRory Freedman got a PETA package in the mail in college that prompted her to go vegetarian, then vegan. She and co-author Kim Barnouin have already transformed the diets of thousands of women with their popular Skinny Bitch series. Now they’re out to give men a spanking for eating meat, dairy, and too much sugar with their new book, Skinny Bastard.

How did you go about tailoring Skinny Bastard to create a more manly appeal?
The language is written in a way to cater to men more. I’m from New Jersey, so I have a naughty streak in me when it comes to the way I talk. The language is really bawdy and irreverent. There’s a chapter called “No Girls Allowed.” We talk about prostate cancer. We also talk about erectile dysfunction. And how what you eat can affect your performance in bed and it can affect your Johnson. There are a lot of fun euphemisms- a lot of fun to be had.

Some people continue to stereotype vegan or vegetarian men as being wimpy or lacking testosterone. Do you address these issues in Skinny Bastard?
We do address those issues. Basically, we talk about professional athletes who are or have been vegetarian or vegan. And how they’re at the top of their game and they’re high performers. There’s certainly no shortage of manly men who are living a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle. We talk about protein and how there’s a myth that you need as much protein as you think you do. How vegetarians get plenty of protein and they can still be strong and manly. And also we address the animal issues and how’s there’s nothing manly about contributing to the slaughter and torture of animals.

Heather Mills Names Vegan Restaurant “V-Bites”

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, May 13th, 2009 in Business, Food & Drink, Models, Restaurants.

Heather Mills Speaks At Viva! The Incredible Veggie ShowHeather Mills just dropped the V word.

She announced recently that the name of her new vegan restaurant housed in an old fish eatery will be named “V-Bites,” which we can only assume is short for Vegan Bites.

After hearing what Mills plans to incorporate into V-Bites, it sounds if Paul McCartney’s ex wants a restaurant and learning center all rolled into one.

The restaurant will feature several rooms, including an interactive center where children can learn about fruits and vegetables through touch screen programs on a computer.

“It’s for everybody,” she said, according to theargus.co.uk. “It will be very family orientated during the day but it will be for all ages. My grandmother lived here for 38 years so I really want it to be somewhere elderly people can go as well.”

“It is going to be really funky, with nice music and ambiance and good staff.”

We’re thrilled that Heather’s plans are finally coming to fruition, but we hope she’s not getting in over her head. In addition to the restaurant and learning center, she wants an outdoor ice rink in the winter. And we thought this was just going to be a restaurant, not a mall. Perhaps it’s her way of encouraging exercise as well as healthy eating.

But all is good in the land of vegan food, so we’ll be cheering for Heather long after she opens her doors for business.

The Mentalist Owain Yeoman Shows His Meat Against Meat

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, May 12th, 2009 in Actors.

owainyeomanpetauklarge

We had something for the guys earlier but today it’s a better ladies’ night than free cover and half off drinks.

Owain Yeoman, star in the CBS television series, The Mentalist, bares his chest for a PETA vegetarian ad.

The actor has recorded not one, but two different PSAs that you can watch, as well as an additional video over at peta.org.

Paula Abdul sang that opposites attract, but with Owain’s case, that seems to be false. He has an animal loving wife, Lucy Davis from The Office, who’s bared some skin for PETA’s Unbearable Cruelty campaign, meant to stop the use of bear fur in the hats worn by the Queen of England’s guards.

Ah, what beautiful activist children they will spawn.
