John Salley, Rory Freedman, Bob Harper Nutrition Tips

Los Angeles Premiere Of "Black Dynamite" - Arrivals

January 1st has arrived and that means the Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine 21 Day Vegan Kickstart program has begun!

As mentioned before, there are several celebrities that offer tips for keeping up your resolution of going veg, like John Salley‘s advice on helping children make good food decisions.

“Adults influence kids’ eating habits. We have to improve kids’ eating habits—and re-educate adults about what is food and what is not food. People can have pizza and pastries without dairy products and eggs. They can have tofu mozzarella cheese or egg substitute and they should use agave in place of high-fructose corn syrup and refined whole sugar.”

Rory Freedman is also there to be the cheerleader in case you do cheat.

“If you slip up and get off track, forgive yourself. It’s okay to be imperfect and to make mistakes. Try to do better, that’s all.”

But with recipes like her Green Goddess pasta, it might be hard to even think about falling off track.

And Bob Harper wants you to examine what’s on your plate before asking why you feel tired and crummy every evening. And hopefully, put some of his black bean quinoa salad on there.

“When you pay attention to what you eat, it becomes easier to understand your relationship with food and how it affects your day-to-day life.”

Julia Stiles Vegan Regret–“EcoStiletto” Interview

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, January 1st, 2010 in Actresses, Food & Drink.

LAByrinth Theater Company's 7th Annual Gala Benefit

There’s nothing worse than when a former vegetarian celebrity goes public and disses the lifestyle. Many of you were ready to rip the burger from Julia Stiles‘ mouth when she used the word orgasm to describe eating meat again after being vegan.

She wants you to know she’s sorry.

“I regret going on a talk show and talking about it,” Julia said. “I was young and impressionable and trying to be funny.”

Sure, Julia, blame it on youth.

Here’s more of what Julia had to say on vegetarianism from EcoStiletto:

On her present vegetarian status:
If I go to someone’s house I won’t make a stink, but I don’t choose to eat that much meat. I love fish, though. That’s probably bad, too. But you have to eat something, right?

On why she went vegan:
Not so much animal rights, but for health reasons. I just started reading more about factory farming and I didn’t want to be consuming that. And there are some spiritual reasons that I got into it, too. It’s weird to talk about, it’s a personal thing, but also I didn’t like the taste of meat that much. And I was grossed out by hormones in dairy products.

I’d never want to be preachy because I think what people choose to eat is their own personal decision. But I was saddened by the idea of the cows in diary pens and what they’re forced to eat—corn that they weren’t ever meant to digest. But there are ways to be super unhealthy as a vegan—all that processed food.

23rd Annual Genesis Awards - Press Room

2009 must be the year for vegan Ellen DeGeneres because she’s already nabbed 2 Best of Veggie Awards and it’s not even New Year’s Eve yet.

Her recent commitment to veganism pushed her into the Top 10 Veg Stories of the Decade by VegNews.

Now, Ellen has been named Woman of the Year by PETA.

“She made vegan pizza with Chef Wolfgang Puck, spoke with Dr. Neal Barnard about the health benefits of a vegan diet, and just in time for Thanksgiving, “talked turkey” about the everyday abuse of animals on factory farms with Jonathan Safran Foer, author of Eating Animals. Ellen also created pages on her Web site that feature insight, info, and tips about cruelty-free living. Visitors can find recipes, read about why Ellen went vegan, learn where to shop, and more.”

Let’s not forgot she shared her personal chef, Roberto Martin, on national television as he taught her fans to cook vegan pot pie and roast, hosted fellow veg Pamela Anderson to discuss the launch of her eco friendly perfume and received an award from the Humane Society of the United States.

What’s on Ellen’s goals for 2010 and the next decade?

Hopefully, getting Simon Cowell and the other American Idol judges to eat vegan tacos every week.

All In For Wishes Celebrity Poker Tournament For Make-A-Wish Foundation

Annie Duke‘s mail order company My Mixed Nuts features gummy bears without the gelatin, sunny bears.

However, Annie has recently announced to her Twitter followers that she’s not vegetarian..right before she announced she was getting some love from a vegan soup.

“Lunch at Mani’s…Yummy curry cauliflower and chickpea soup. Vegan :)”

Your average burger lover usually doesn’t Tweet about cauliflowers and chickpeas.

Has Annie joined the club of flexitarians or part time vegetarians?

Is she a fish eating veggie?

Or does she just want to kick vegan Daniel Negreanu‘s butt at the poker table, edamame present or not.

Oh, to be the best friend of Jane Velez-Mitchell, who sent her favorite people some chocolate without the butter, milk and or egg.

“Sent vegan Chocolates to the Atlanta crew for Xmas – so far they’re getting rave reviews!”

Unfortunately, not everyone works with Jane and the rest of vegans are left to fend for themselves when the cravings attack.

Instead of giving in to Snickers or the closest available piece of candy you’ll gobble down so fast you’ll forget you’re cheating, invest a little time in learning some brands of vegan chocolates.

There are brands you might not suspect to be vegan, like Trader Joe’s chocolate chips or some of Newman’s Own Chocolate Bars.

Other brands specifically market themselves as vegan like Endangered Species Dark Chocolate or Plamill Organic Vegan Chocolate.

Raiding Jane’s candy jar hidden in her file cabinet would probably be a great place too, but most of us will never experience that option.

Real Food Daily Keeps Tobey Maguire, LA Celebrities Happy

**EXCLISUVE** Tobey Maguire spends some quality time with daughter Ruby Sweetheart and a friend in LA

Vegetarians and meat eaters can get along and even eat together, so says Lauren Harb at the Huffington Post.

Harb reviewed several restaurants in the Los Angeles area that ranged from totally vegan to meat dominant with recessive veggie features.

Real Food Daily, a vegan food mecca, made the list to make everyone happy in mixed company.

“OK, I’ll be honest. Most meat-eaters aren’t dying to eat vegan cheese or meat substitutes when they can have the real thing. But it is with extreme confidence that I promise you, no matter what your diet will or won’t allow, you want to eat their Not-chos. More often than you probably should. And yes, you want to add the tofu taco mix. No, you won’t know the difference from the real thing.”

Besides Not-chos and tofu tacos, RFD is the place to get a glimpse of numerous LA celebs like Tobey Maguire, Elizabeth Berkley, Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr and even meat loving country cutie Brad Paisley.

Is there an LA restaurant on Harb’s list that keeps you happy?

Natalie Portman “Interview” 20 Most Beautiful People Decade

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, December 26th, 2009 in Actresses.

Natalie Portman arrives for the 2009 Gotham Independent Film Awards in New York

Interview Magazine has named its pick for the 20 most beautiful people of the decade.

It was no doubt a tough decision, requiring committees of scientists, academics, legal experts and laypersons, but somehow Interview came to the conclusion that Natalie Portman is worthy of the title.

The Veg Star couldn’t agree more!

From Interviewmagazine.com:

“We’ve had her on our radar since she was the 12-year-old Lolita of The Professional. And somehow, her beauty has grown and grown over the past decade. Now 28, she’s won a Golden Globe, earned a psychology degree from Harvard, devoted her free time to social and political activism, and looked better than Demi with a shaved head. She’s even a vegan. Enough, really.”

Being vegan is great for your health, the planet and the animals, but can it really make you sexier?

Both Alanis Morissette and Woody Harrelson credit cutting dairy for making their skin smooth and Alicia Silverstone‘s beauty regime includes eating kale and swiss chard as much as daily moisturizing.

This New Year’s might be a great time to make the resolution to give veg a try.

Good luck on making People’s 50 Most Beautiful.
