Hugh Jackman Hot N Cold On Vegan Despite Brazier Book Foreword

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, September 7th, 2010 in Actors, Food & Drink, Not So Vegetarian.

Hugh Jackman is one confusing vegan wannabe/chicken eater.

Jackman wrote a foreword to one of vegan triathlete Brendan Brazier‘s books that contained the line, “there’s every chance that I will be a vegan by the time you read…”–crediting veganism for helping him put on lean muscle before filming X Men Origins:Wolverine in 2009.

Fast forward to today, Jackman’s reps confirm he is not a vegan.

However, what’s even more confusing is that at a press conference for the movie, Jackman emphasized that his ripped body had nothing to do with pea and hemp protein.

Times of the Internet is reporting that a recent edition of In Touch claims Jessica Simpson is getting into vegan eating and cooking because her boyfriend, New Orleans Saints’ Tight End Eric Johnson, is vegan.

“Eric is a vegan, so there’s a lot of foods he won’t eat,” a source said.

Simpson has gone so far as to hire a chef to teach her some vegan food secrets so she can prepare them for Eric.

“She barely knew where the kitchen was before. But she is motivated now, because she knows it makes Eric happy,” the source added.

If this gossip is valid, this news is good to hear about Jessica, but even 10 times better to hear a professional NFL player is living on an entirely plant-based diet. One strike against the stereotype that vegetarian men are weak, wimpy and non-athletic. And one step closer to getting another naked man to pose in PETA’s provocative ads so the veggie ladies can have their share of meatless eye candy.

Phil Mickelson casually said he was working on a veggie burger with Five Guys Burger and Fries restaurant, a franchise he bought the rights to before becoming vegetarian.

A Q & A session with readers at Golf.com reveals he is indeed serious about this, but who knows when Lefty will make it happen. Until then, don’t forget there are several fast food chains that already offer vegetarian patties. No, they aren’t perfect. Many aren’t vegan. Some of them are cooked on the same surface as meat. But if you happen to wander into an establishment during its quieter hours and ask politely, they may clean the grill or toast it in a separate pan or throw it in the microwave.

If you can endure Johnny Rockets singing waiters, there’s a Streamliner patty waiting for you–a Boca Burger with grilled onions, shredded lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and mustard.

Dannii Minogue Enjoys Vegan Cashew Ice Cream. Here’s A Recipe.

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, September 6th, 2010 in Female Singers, Food & Drink, Recipes.

Who would think a diet meant to lose baby fat would include ice cream? Dannii Minogue has reportedly kicked up her already healthy eating routine to a notch where there’s only room for organic food and lots of nuts and vegetables six weeks after giving birth to her son, Ethan.

Instead of denying herself something sweet, a source says she enjoys vegan ice cream made from nuts.

“She makes vegan ice cream out of cashews and agave syrup, so she’s got that when she needs something sweet.”

It’s no secret that nuts, soaked in water, blended, creamed and mixed with spices and seasonings, give rise to a multitude of vegan foods like cheese and cream. Vegetarian Star found a recipe for ice cream fashioned from cashews that involves the following ingredients:

  • 1 Cup cashews (no need to soak)
  • 1 1/2 Cup water
  • 1/3 Cup raw agave
  • 1/4 tsp salt (+/-)
  • 1/3 Cup raisins (this is what adds a buttery flavor)
  • 1 vanilla bean
  • 1-2 Tbsp Cacao butter or Coconut oil or young coconut meat

Eco, vegan chef and author Bryant Terry is now officially unavailable in the line of single, vegan men who can cook to save the Earth and satisfy an appetite. Terry married Jidan Koon this weekend at the couple’s home in Oakland, California.

The couple loves to cook, combining foods from both African and Asian cultures, and for their engagement party, Terry and Koon created Afro-Asian Jung, a soul-food twist to a traditional Asian tamale-like food “jung,” that wraps a plant-based filling inside bamboo leaves.

“While glutinous or sweet rice is traditionally used to give jung its trademark stickiness, we used three kinds of rice to add color, texture and depth of flavor,” writes the couple at Hyphen Magazine. “For additional filling, we used peanuts (a staple of African and African American cooking as well as a symbol of long life for Chinese), black-eyed peas (a symbol of good luck for African Americans), and shiitake mushrooms (a symbol of longevity in Japan and China).

Morrissey Sparks Criticism Over Racial Chinese As Subspecies Comment

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, September 3rd, 2010 in Animal Issues, Male Singers.

Morrissey has sparked controversy again, this time being accused of making racially inappropriate statements describing Chinese treatment of animals in circuses and zoos.

During an interview with Simon Armitage, Morrissey said, “Did you see the thing on the news about their treatment of animals and animal welfare? Absolutely horrific. You can’t help but feel that the Chinese are a subspecies.”

A spokesperson for Love Music Hate Racism called Morrissey’s statements “just crude racism” and wants the singer to rescind his comments.

“When you start using language like ‘subspecies’, you are entering into dark and murky water,” Martin Smith from Love Music said.
