The China Study

The China Study

“I came from a dairy farm and started my career strongly believing in the nutritional value of this food, especially for its protein content. But, in our experiments, we documented multiple times a remarkable ability of the main protein of cow’s milk, casein, to promote cancer growth and to do so by a plethora of mechanisms. For many years, animal-based protein, like casein, has been known to increase blood cholesterol and encourage early stages of heart disease.”

Dr. T. Colin Campbell, author of “The China Study,” and inspiration for Bill Clinton going vegan on how dairy products may not do a body good like those milk commercials claim. And while casein protein has been associated with heart disease, soy protein has been found to benefit cholesterol by lowering LDL (bad) cholesterol levels and raising HDL (good) levels.

Will the new slogan for health soon be, “Soymilk. It does a body’s heart good?”

Katy Perry‘s on the cover of Italian magazine Grazia’s latest issue and inside she shares her plans for this holiday weekend’s dinner with newlywed husband Russell Brand.

“There will be me and Russ and a pink Christmas tree and a tofu-urky. We’ll open one present the night before because that’s the tradition in my family. And we’ll do something new. We’ll start our own new tradition because we are a family now.”

Could that new tradition include eating veg throughout the entire year and not just during the holidays?

The couple has reportedly also given up dairy at least until the end of the year and both have been eating a diet of plant-based proteins like tofu and raw vegetables to get in better shape.

What’s your veg tradition for the holidays?

Joshua Gomez, who plays Chuck’s co-worker Morgan Grimes on the NBC television series about a computer store geek who accidentally downloads government secrets to his brain, “Chuck,” is a vegetarian in real life.

So when it came time to devour the meatball sub sandwich from Subway presented to him during a scene on “Chuck  Vs. The Leftovers,” we got a little nervous when he was about to chow down. Was the sandwich stuffed with wheatballs instead? Luckily (or perhaps a little unluckily for Morgan), his dinner is interrupted by an unexpected customer carrying a weapon.

Subway doesn’t offer much for vegans except a Veggie Delight with no cheese on Italian bread. If you’d like to see that change, maybe you should look into Compassion Over Killing’s “We Love Subway” campaign.

Duff Goldman

Duff Goldman, star of Food Network’s “Ace of Cakes,” has made the announcement that he’s switching to cage-free eggs for his company, Charm City Cakes.

Goldman joins fellow celebrity chef Guy Fieri and dozens of national retailers and franchises like Quizno’s and Denny’s to source eggs from farms that don’t confine hens in cages so small, they aren’t even able to spread their wings. Cage-free hens have 2-3 times more space than caged hens.

“Charm City Cakes is pleased to have switched to only using cage-free eggs, which is a great way to improve animal welfare and meet our customers’ expectations for being socially responsible,” said Duff.

Home Cooking by Trisha Yearwood

Trisha Yearwood and her husband Garth Brooks may have a string of number one country hits but the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine places their cookbook anywhere but near the top when it comes to heart-healthy eating.

The group of doctors who recommend a plant-based diet has named the top worst cookbooks of 2010 which include titles by Yearwood, Gordon Ramsay, a Top Chef Collection and more.

Here’s just a little of what PCRM had to say about Yearwood’s Home Cooking, which includes a breakfast recipe for almost a dozen eggs!

“The Georgia native presents her recipes with family stories and tips, but unfortunately, the book does not take into account the state of Southerners’ health. States in the Southeast have the highest rates of obesity in the nation, but Yearwood’s recipes are loaded with fat and cholesterol. Garth’s Breakfast Bowl, for example, includes eight large eggs, a pound each of bacon and sausage, cheese tortellini, cheddar cheese, tater tots, and butter.”
