Author, model, and actress Joanne Rose gave VegNews magazine some insight into her upcoming video series Vegan 101.

The series are short, comedic skits about veganism. If you recall us telling you earlier, one of the videos involves making fun of dating a vegan. Joanne gave more details about her motivations for creating, Dating a Vegan.

“I wanted to do a take on awkward moments, which seems to be something most vegans have encountered at some stage of dating. I hope to achieve international success so the word “vegan” becomes a strong part of global vocabulary, which will influence others to learn about the lifestyle through curiosity and fascination. With entertainment, people won’t shun away.”

Ok, vegans, it’s time to let loose. Tell us all your horror and humorous stories you’ve encountered while dating. Did you spend the first three dates answering food questions? Prince charming try to sneak meat in your food at the dinner table?

What about the carnis or flexers? Did you get sick of your vegan babe taking 20 minutes to order food because he kept asking about ingredients?

Read the entire interview with Joanne at VegNews.com.

Engine 2 Diet’s Rip Esselstyn: Real Men Eat Plants, Boys Eat Meat

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, May 18th, 2009 in Authors, Videos.

Nice little video of Rip Esselstyn, author of the Engine 2 Diet discussing how the firefighters of Austin, Texas’ Fire Engine Company #2 eat vegan during work shifts.

Rip encouraged the guys at Engine 2 to go veg after some were having medical problems like high cholesterol. According to the video, a study showed heart disease kills more firefighters than fire itself.

Esselstyn’s book, which helped Newsweek’s David Noonan go vegan and lose weight, was written after he was inspired to go veg from his father’s research. His father, Dr. Caldwell Essestyn says, “Having the USDA design your food pyramid is like having Al Capone do your taxes.”

Esselstyn’s entire family eats vegan and it looks like the family favorite food is kale (Watch aunt Esselstyn rip the leaves off that plant, yo)

Best quote of the day starts at the beginning of the video when Rip says, “Real men eat plants and boys meat meat.”

Rip thinks in the next five years eating meat will be such a social disgrace, taking your tenderloin away from the picnic gathering will be equal to asking a smoker not to smoke inside.

While he may be a little overly optimistic, with more people choosing to at least flex or reduce some meats in their diet, Rip’s definitely onto some future trend.

Rory Freedman Talks Birth Of A Skinny Bastard With The Veg Star

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, May 13th, 2009 in Authors, Interviews.

Gretchen Ryans Little Pretty Exhibition OpeningRory Freedman got a PETA package in the mail in college that prompted her to go vegetarian, then vegan. She and co-author Kim Barnouin have already transformed the diets of thousands of women with their popular Skinny Bitch series. Now they’re out to give men a spanking for eating meat, dairy, and too much sugar with their new book, Skinny Bastard.

How did you go about tailoring Skinny Bastard to create a more manly appeal?
The language is written in a way to cater to men more. I’m from New Jersey, so I have a naughty streak in me when it comes to the way I talk. The language is really bawdy and irreverent. There’s a chapter called “No Girls Allowed.” We talk about prostate cancer. We also talk about erectile dysfunction. And how what you eat can affect your performance in bed and it can affect your Johnson. There are a lot of fun euphemisms- a lot of fun to be had.

Some people continue to stereotype vegan or vegetarian men as being wimpy or lacking testosterone. Do you address these issues in Skinny Bastard?
We do address those issues. Basically, we talk about professional athletes who are or have been vegetarian or vegan. And how they’re at the top of their game and they’re high performers. There’s certainly no shortage of manly men who are living a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle. We talk about protein and how there’s a myth that you need as much protein as you think you do. How vegetarians get plenty of protein and they can still be strong and manly. And also we address the animal issues and how’s there’s nothing manly about contributing to the slaughter and torture of animals.

Kathy Freston On Essential Vegetarian Reading List

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, May 12th, 2009 in Authors.

Kathy Freston Celebrates Her New Book Quantum WellnessDoes anyone even read those suggested lists posted by Amazon.com users? Seems like it’s more for the user to feel highly important, knowing they’ve made a difference by enlightening a potential buyer that Radiohead is very dissimilar to Filter, but both CDs sound great while reading the Natural Herbs book.

Here’s a list you might find helpful, though. Bruce Friedrich at the HuffingtonPost has compiled his essential reads for vegetarians.

Kathy Freston, author of the Quantum Wellness books, including her latest, The Quantum Wellness Cleanse is included.

“In our toxic society, Kathy Freston is pumping in some much-needed fresh air, with chapters discussing not just the importance of eating a vegetarian diet for health, ecological, and spiritual reasons, but also discussing a range of other practices that will inspire readers to be the happiest and healthiest people we can possibly be,” writes Bruce.

The Engine-2 Diet, which inspired Newsweek editor David Noonan to go vegan made the cut.

Dr. Dean Ornish and John Robbins are also a few of Bruce’s favorites, but he does give warning to the faint of ears who plan to read anything by Skinny Bitch authors Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin.

“…for anyone, really, who enjoys a chatty and irreverent — and I do mean irreverent, so be warned! — tone…”

Dr. Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson: Less Would Eat Meat If They Killed It

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, May 11th, 2009 in Authors, Videos.

In a new documentary, Processed People, author Dr. Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson explains the very simple reason why he went veg: He didn’t want to see animals slaughtered.

Masson thinks that most people feel this way and if we were forced to kill our own meat, at least 90% of people would be vegetarians.

“There are always people who are willing to kill,” Dr. Masson says. “But you know what’s interesting? In every society, butchers are almost a class apart. It’s as if the person does not want to be associated with the act of killing. I think almost everybody has a bad conscience about it.”

Masson is the author of books such as The Face on Your Plate: The Truth about Food and When Elephants Weep.

Cloris Leachman Juice Fast Cured “Cluster Of Maladies”

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, May 10th, 2009 in Actresses, Authors, Food & Drink.

Cloris Leachman Book Signing And RecognitionCloris Leachman recently made an appearance at the Escondido Public Library in California to promote and sign her new book, Cloris: My Autobiography.

It’s known that the octogenarian has been a vegetarian for decades and Cloris revealed what prompted her to try the diet.

She was suffering from several medical problems that doctors couldn’t solve, including hay fever, asthma and insomnia. She started a juice fast, which cured her ailments, and the rest is veggie history.

The actress and Dancing With The Stars contestant is a strong advocate of the diet, posed for PETA for the Let Vegetarianism Grow On You campaign, and even chided a fan during her book signing for drinking soda pop.

“Quit, why don’t you?” Cloris admonished. “It will save your life. Start having juice.”

Gretchen Ryans Little Pretty Exhibition OpeningThe world’s most famous Skinny Bitch, isn’t stingy when it comes to causes she cares about.

Like Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers would say, “Give it away, give it away, give it away now.” Rory will donate her $10 (although maybe not as washed out and wrinkled) to match your money!

Mother’s Day doesn’t last year round and neither does this donation challenge. You have three days to dig those coins from the couch cushions.
