Meatless Mouthful: That’s Why We Don’t Eat Animals’ Origins

“I was teaching art at an elementary school and the kids were all very curious about my veganism. I shared my point of view with them and they responded with incredible insight and clarity. Many of them, even being raised on meat and dairy, wished to go vegan, but there was no support system in their schools or homes. I looked, but couldn’t find a book on the subject that wasn’t based on a talking animal or vegetable — which I felt they were too smart for. I feel strongly that whatever you do, whether you’re a housecleaner, makeup artist, or a lawyer, you have the power to create change within your field. So I decided to write the book myself.”

Jessica Seinfeld Vegetable Plagiarism: Not Guilty

3rd Annual Baby Buggy Bedtime Bash - Red Carpet

Who ever thought you could “get legal” with produce?

A judge has thrown out a case against the wife of comedian Jerry Seinfeld, Jessica Seinfeld, by the author of a kids cookbook.

Missy Chase Lapine had alleged that Jessica’s book, Deceptively Delicious: Secrets to Getting Your Kids Eating Good Food, was so highly similar to Lapine’s The Sneaky Chef: Simple Strategies for Hiding Healthy Foods in Kids’ Favorite Meals, Jessica must be plagiarizing!

“We are pleased that the court saw through this sham and dismissed the baseless copyright claim,” Orin Snyder, attorney for the Seinfelds said.

Jerry had joked about the incident on the The Late Show with David Letterman, calling it “vegetable plagiarism.”

The main differences between Jessica’s and Missy’s book, the U.S. court judge Laura Swain ruled, was that Jessica’s is “bright and cheerful, full of different colors and various patterns,” while Missy’s is “a dry, rather text-heavy work.”

Jessica created the book because she and Jerry have a child that’s a picky eater.

Eli Roth may beat Nazis with baseball bats in Inglourious Basterds, but he would never dream of doing so to anyone in real life-including an animal.

He’s teamed up with PETA to do a PSA, advising people to report abuse on animals.

Sharing your drink with one is completely optional.

“If you know of someone who’s abusing an animal, please tell the police or tell an adult,” Roth said. “People who get away with hurting animals often turn their violence against people, and that’s a cycle we need to break.”

That’s Why We Don’t Eat Animals Gets Rave Celebrity Reviews

Not ready to let your 5 year old watch an animal being skinned alive yet? No problem!

For any parent looking for a children’s book to introduce some arguments on choosing the vegetarian lifestyle, That’s Why We Don’t Eat Animals, is a great start.

Author Ruby Roth uses a gentler approach (no slaughterhouse pics included) to teach children about the relationship between the food on their plate and animal suffering and even touches on environmental issues.

Roth also incites empathy for animals by letting readers know they experience pain, sensitivity, and happiness, which is another way children can relate.

The book is recommended for grades 3-6.

As expected, several notable vegetarians have praised the book, including actor Ed Begley Jr.

“In a time when we are all working to go green, I am thrilled that That’s Why We Don’t Eat Animals makes the connection between food and the environment, inspiring children to be aware and involved.”

Primatologist Jane Goodall had this to say:

“This is a powerful and important book. Farm animals have emotions similar to our pets and this is conveyed in Roth’s enchanting illustrations. It will make children – and their parents – think. But it will not lead to nightmares, rather respect and compassion for the creatures whose wellbeing is in our hands.”

And actress Alicia Silverstone added:

“Like many people, I knew as a child that I didn’t want to eat animals. That’s Why We Don’t Eat Animals would have offered me the guidance and inspiration I needed to understand those instincts. This book is a must-have for anyone who loves animals.”

That’s Why We Don’t Eat Animals was released in May, and can be purchased online.

Animal Liberation’s Peter Singer On Michael Vick: Critics Go Veg!

The Michael Vick hype may take a long time, if ever, to wind down.

Until then, we’ll continue to update you on those in the veg community who have something to say about the matter.

Peter Singer, famous for his book, Animal Liberation, has a viewpoint somewhat like Alec Baldwin’s in that he feels Vick’s actions were horrible, but were minor compared to the meat industry.

“What he did was certainly awful. But many people do or participate in things regarding animals that are awful. To some extent, I think people may have rushed to judgment because he did something awful to dogs.”

“For example, the kinds of things that are done to pigs to turn them into ham or bacon are awful, but we don’t care as much about pigs as we do dogs. And I think there’s every reason to believe that pigs are as sensitive and intelligent as dogs.”

“What I’m saying is that the people who are very quick to jump on Michael Vick maybe could spend some time thinking about how they participate in the cruelty to animals just by walking into the supermarket, spend some time thinking about what happened to that animal before it was turned into meat.”
