Carol Leifer Or Herschel Walker–Who Would You

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, March 24th, 2010 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Comedians, Reality TV.

Celebrity Apprentice hasn’t been too nice to vegetarians, as the potential CEOs have been given the “You’re Fired” order with neither a fruit basket nor a severance package.

This season comedian Carol Leifer was the first to go (but she did squeeze some money out of Donald for an animal charity), while Herschel Walker got the pink slip after he failed trying to make executive decisions about chicken when he doesn’t even eat it.

Better luck next time guys.

A business lunch is still available. Between the two contestants, who would you rather do…

Carrie Ann Inaba needs some veg advice on proteins, quick!

The Dancing with the Stars judge should have had a heart to heart talk with former contestant Cloris Leachman.

Inaba says that although she used to be vegetarian, she found it hard to combine the right proteins, but she’s looking to go back.

“I eat organic and I cut down on meat. I tried to be a vegetarian but my body craves protein and I haven’t found the right mix yet. But I cut down to only two times a week, and it has to be organic meat.

According to a FAQ sheet from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, finding the right mix of proteins may be easier than once thought.

“It was once thought that various plant foods had to be eaten together to get their full protein value, otherwise known as protein combining or protein complementing. We now know that intentional combining is not necessary to obtain all of the essential amino acids. As long as the diet contains a variety of grains, legumes, and vegetables, protein needs are easily met.”

PCRM then goes on to list plant sources of protein with the number of proteins in each source in grams.

Black beans, seitan, tofu, tempeh and lentils top the list and the group recommends you aim for  2-3 servings of legumes every day.

Have you found your right mix of veggie proteins yet?

Tyson Jerry and Cloe Walker. The duo made the Guinness Book of World Records for driving the most miles in a vegetable oil powered van.

Tyson Jerry and Cloe Whittaker are two twenty something Canadians that have just broke the Guinness Book of World Records in a very environmentally friendly way.

The pair are the only people to date to drive the most miles–23,697 miles–in a van powered by vegetable oil.

The journey started in mid November in British, S.C. and took them through 20 cities through North America.

Pre-arranged stops were made at restaurants to “fuel up” when needed.

The 1993 Delica Mitsubishi that carried them on their journey has been nicknamed appropriately “The Veggie Van.”

Ginnifer Goodwin Writes In Protest Of “Happy Cow” CMAB Ads

Antonio Banderas, Tippi Hedren and Melanie Griffith at the The 24th Genesis Awards in LA

You’ve seen those commercials for “Happy Cows” sponsored by the California Milk Advisory Board where cows are seen roaming freely in the pasture, females get a chance to gossip while the bulls attempt to speak French in hopes procreating before slaughter time.

Not everyone agrees with the idyllic picture portrayed by the CMAB and Big Love actress Ginnifer Goodwin has written her thoughts to the Federal Trade Commission regarding what animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says are deceptive practices in these campaigns.

“In show business, we often have good reason for making people believe things that aren’t true, but there is no excuse for the CMAB’s misrepresentation of the milk industry,” writes Goodwin. “[C]onsumers deserve better than to be fed cheerful lies about ‘happy cows.'”

Goodwin goes on to say that the reality is most cows in California are confined in crammed spaces filled with dirt and their own excrement, and suffer udder infections as a result of being forced to produce unnatural amounts of milk induced through administering drugs.

World Series Game 6 -- Phillies at Yankees

As previously reported, Citizens Bank Park, home of the Philadelphia Phillies has added more veggie hotdog stands so those that aren’t into eating dozens of animal parts rolled into one frank don’t have to walk as far for a snack.

To add to the excitement, the Phillies are holding a voting contest to name the Signature Hot Dog of Citizens Bank Park.

There are three creations to choose from and the winning version can dress a vegetarian hot dog in addition to an all beef one.

Sweet!

And these varieties aren’t your standard ketchup, mustard and relish.

The South Philly Dog comes with broccoli rabe, spicy roasted peppers and sharp provolone on a crusty Italian roll. Olde Philadelphia Dog is topped with Amish pepper hash, dill pickle and yellow mustard on a poppy seed roll. The CBP Summer Dog is a spicy variety with tomato and pickle relish and ancho pepper sauce on a pretzel roll.

ANY of these combinations have the potential to be made with a veggie dog!

Voting takes place here starting Monday, closes on April 4, with the winner announced on April 12.

Baseball and hotdogs go hand in hand in tradition.

The herbivores aren’t getting left out on this one.

“Gristle” Includes Thoughts From Small Animal Farmers

Gristle

Gristle

Moby and co-editor of the newly released book on factory farming and its impact on the planet, Miyun Park, spoke to Planet Green recently.

Although Moby is a staunch vegan, some might be surprised to learn that some of the contributors to Gristle are in the meat industry.

Park insists that everyone educate themselves on factory farming, one of the biggest disturbances to human, animal and environment health.

This means including insight from Paul Willis, manager of Niman Ranch Pork Co, who discusses how large farms put a strain on rural communities.

“The differences between industrial agribusiness and more sustainable, more humane, more ethical production practices are stark, and all of animal ag can’t be painted with the same brush,” Park explains. “The book focuses on intensive factory farming, which, unfortunately has a much larger share of animal ag. And this isn’t to say that there can’t be steps taken even within industrial agribusiness, but that won’t happen until we all—omnivores, flexitarians, vegetarians, and vegans alike—speak out collectively.”

Alicia Silverstone “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” Vegan Treats

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, March 24th, 2010 in Actresses, Food & Drink, TV Hosts, Videos.

Alicia Silverstone visited Jimmy Fallon for Late Night With Jimmy Fallon and brought along some vegan food from NYC restaurants Pure Food and Wine,Candle 79 and Sacred Chow.

Alicia explains to Jimmy what seitan is, and its benefits.

Fallon samples a tempeh reuben, but cautions against tasting it at first in case there’s real mayonnaise, something Fallon says “taste like pus.”

“Which is fair, because that’s what dairy is,” Alicia says. “Dairy is pus and blood.”

Thankfully, it’s all vegan, no pus and delicious.
