Steve-O, “Jackass” Stephen Glover, Goes Vegan

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, September 12th, 2009 in Actors, Food & Drink.

Steve-O
Steve-O has gone completely vegan, according to his website, steveo.com.

After toying with vegetarianism and pescatarianism, Steve-O, who’s real name is Stephen Glover, had made the official plunge into a total animal-free world.

“When I first became involved with PETA, it was on an “issue-by-issue” basis- they interviewed me in my old apartment about animal abuse in the circus as I sat on a leather sofa,” the Jackass star writes.

“At that time I was a meat-eater, and told them I believe that if anyone is going to wear the flesh or fur of an animal, they should at least have the decency to eat the meat of that animal. That comment led to my involvement in PETA’s “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” campaign.”

Steve can currently be seen in PETA’s Cruelty Doesn’t Fly ad campaign where Pamela Anderson strips potential passengers of fur, leather, and wool.

“The following year I chose to stop eating meat (and stop wearing or purchasing anything made out of leather), however, citing reports that Jesus Christ fed lots of people with fish, I continued to eat fish. Most recently, for just over a month now, I’ve kept to a strictly vegan diet and I’ve not felt “hard-done-by” at all. I have been really enjoying making a project out of seeking out an extremely healthy diet of raw, organic, vegan foods- and I plan on continuing to do so.”

Steve’s currently not out convert everyone to veganism, and says “a vegan diet isn’t for everyone,” adding “It’s not my choice to try to tell people how to live their lives (not anymore, anyway!).”

Meatless Mouthful: That’s Why We Don’t Eat Animals’ Origins

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, September 11th, 2009 in Authors, Books, Meatless Mouthful.

“I was teaching art at an elementary school and the kids were all very curious about my veganism. I shared my point of view with them and they responded with incredible insight and clarity. Many of them, even being raised on meat and dairy, wished to go vegan, but there was no support system in their schools or homes. I looked, but couldn’t find a book on the subject that wasn’t based on a talking animal or vegetable — which I felt they were too smart for. I feel strongly that whatever you do, whether you’re a housecleaner, makeup artist, or a lawyer, you have the power to create change within your field. So I decided to write the book myself.”

The Cinema Society & Hugo Boss Screening of Inglourious Basterds - Arrivals

Poetry is a beautiful gift to give someone for a birthday or anniversary.

Poetry about tacos…strange, but still beautiful.

Today is Moby‘s birthday, and he took to his journal to brag about what he received for his 44th, which included a vegan cassoulet (something normally made from sausages and pig fat) and a poem about tacos.

“everyone should receive a poem about tacos on their birthday. but then taco poems might not be so unique. and, for the record again, the poem was about literal tacos involving taco shells, beans, lettuce, hot sauce, and possibly seitan (wheat gluten, not the flesh of the devil).”

Vegan Cassoulet sounds savory-navy beans in a broth of mushrooms with added seasonings of parsley, rosemary and thyme, among others.

Check out the recipe we found for Vegan Cassoulet, after the jump.

Heather Mills Blasts Jamie Oliver For Male Calf Castration

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, September 11th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Chefs.

Heather Mills is all smiles while out walking with a friend to a salon in the West Village in NYC

Vegan Heather Mills isn’t showing any love for fellow Brit Jamie Oliver.

The celebrity chef recently castrated a male calf and ate its testicles on his television show Jamie’s American Road Trip.

And Jamie’s show doesn’t involve any reality TV eating challenges, either.

Using the power of the Twitter, Heather wrote:

“I’m horrified watching Jamie Oliver castrate calves and eat their b*****ks, how low can you go, he says they taste like Scampi!”

Director of Animal Aid, Andrew Taylor, agrees with Heather.

“The public is convinced Jamie Oliver is the real deal but hopefully this barbaric act will open their eyes to the fact he is a phony when it comes to animal welfare,” Taylor said. “He pretends he cares about animals but this makes an utter mockery of that. Castrating cattle in this way is vicious and grotesque and he’s giving credibility to an ugly trade. If he thinks this is good prime time TV he has been duped.”

Jamie’s rep defended the chef’s actions by saying the show is meant to show the British public the different aspects of American cuisine and life.

A regular part of American cuisine and life? That’s it! Cow testicles must have been the “mystery meat” in your school lunches growing up.

“Jamie is on his American road trip to observe and to learn and to show the viewing public some parts of America they might not know about. Jamie is well-known for his championing of better welfare for animals and has had awards from many animal welfare groups.”

Guess Jamie thinks his awards are a free get out of animal cruelty jail pass.

Rapper MURS took time to Tweet before grabbing some vegan food and taking some much needed R & R.

“tuck tuck tiggiddy tuckered out. going home for a nap. after a vegan chilli dog stop.”

A vegan chili dog sounds pretty easy to whip up.

After all, how hard can it be to grab some veg chili, slop it on a wiener, and place it between a bun?

We can’t get enough of Lightlife Smart Chili, which comes in pouch form, ready to heat in the microwave and serve.

While you’re in territory Lightlife, grab one of their many varieties of vegan hot dogs from Tofu Pups to Smart Dogs to Smart Dogs Jumbo-if you like your wieners big.

Grab a bun and top with fixings…There’s never been a recipe more convenient or tastier.

Exactly what you need during those tuckered out times.

Jenny McCarthy Vegan: Rachael Ray Block Party Announcement

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, September 10th, 2009 in Actresses, Comedians, Food & Drink, Models.

Jenny McCarthy Hosts An Evening At Pure

Surprising news of all news.

Jenny McCarthy has publicly stated that she’s a vegan.

Celebrity chef Rachael Ray threw a Big Block Party in Jenny’s hometown of Chicago, Illinois to kick off her 4th season of the Rachael Ray Show that will air September 14 at 10 AM.

According to chicagotribune.com, Jenny and Rachael engaged in some chit chat and Jenny made suggestions for her hometown favorite foods.

Jenny recommended pizza from Giordanos.

“You’ve got to try the sausage one,” McCarthy suggested, “even though I’m now vegan.”

Hopefully, Jenny knows what vegan means and she’s not one of those chicken eating vegetarians like Eve.

Jenny has been outspoken on autism and her son, and some people believe switching an autistic child to a vegan, gluten-free diet improves symptoms.

Jenny has even recommended vegan, gluten-free Nana’s Cookies as one of her preferred products.

Could this have been a factor in Jenny’s switch?

All we can say is great for her, hope she keeps it up.

Now, let’s work on that animal killing Botox issue.

DBTV: John Norris from The Discerning Brute on Vimeo.

How can one get any work done when you’re chowing down on good food?

We’d like to ask Joshua Katcher at The Discerning Brute this question, as he sat down with MTV news reporter John Norris at the Jivamukti Yoga Cafe and School enjoying delicious food such as grilled portabello pesto with hummus pannini and and signature salads made with black beans and home grown sprouts.

Yum!

Joshua and John touched on veganism and the vegan community between bites.

“Working in music, the majority of vegans I meet come at it from less an animal rights point of view than they do from a straight edge or some kind of more personal health concern,” John says.

John is a vegan both of out animal rights compassion and the belief that “we’re not as a species, worth more than any other species.”

Watch the clip for the entire interview and tell us why you chose to go vegan.
