After several cancellations in several cities, the Oscar winning documentary on the killing of dolphins on the island of Taiji, The Cove, finally debuted in some Japanese theatres.

According to the New York Times, although opposition was still strong during the showings, movie goers welcomed the education, citing they knew nothing of dolphin hunting and that the Japanese had a right to know such things.

While many of the dolphins captured on the island are killed and sold as unhealthy, mercury laden meat, some are taken to marine parks. The movie prompted one famous dolphin broker, Chris Porter, known as the “darth vador” by animal rights activists, to release his 17 dolphins and find a new profession.

Written by Vegetarian Star on July 14th, 2010 in Authors, Food & Drink, Videos.

Sure, she may be the queen of dispensing advice on eating right on a vegan diet, but Skinny Bitch author Rory Freedman used to be a junk food lover, as she reveals in this latest video during an interview with PETA.

“I’m the girl who used to eat fast food every single day of my life,” Freedman says.

Veganism should be about health, but that doesn’t mean it always needs to be the brown rice and kale Freedman is getting cozy with in the camera. Veggier versions of desserts and vegetarian fast food restaurants are popping up around the globe.

Stella McCartney Named Official Olympics Designer

Written by Vegetarian Star on July 14th, 2010 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Fashion.

Stella McCartney

Stella McCartney has been chosen as the creative director for the British Olympic Team!

Stella’s title means she’ll be overseeing everything the athletes wear, as well as the fan wear. Her partnership with the Olympic brand Team GB marks the first time a fashion designer will be responsible for the attire of the entire British team, including for the 2012 London Games.

Stella called her role, “an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” and her words may be more than sentiment for other fashion designers.

No other designer has been granted involvement with the Olympic games at such a high level, the closest coming to the honor being Ralph Lauren being responsible for the opening ceremony outfits for team USA at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Myq Kaplan Stand-Up Comedy from Myq Kaplan on Vimeo.

Myq Kaplan (pronounced “Mike”) is a favorite Last Comic Standing among television bloggers, partially due to his ability to successfully incorporate ripping himself as a meatless man.

The vegan for about 5 years who was vegetarian for about 8 years before that has a hilarious clip from Conan O’Brien where he jokes about the lifestyle. Not all vegetarians are treehuggers and love the environment, for example.

“People assume I’m into other kinds of activism,” Kaplan says. “Oh, you’re vegetarian. You care about the environment…No. I eat the environment.”

Veganism isn’t the only medium from which Kaplan can get roars from the audience. He jokingly offers insight to Prohibition and Women’s Suffrage and why one led to another…and back again. Watch the clip for more.

Rocsi Diaz, host of BET’s music video countdown show, 106 and Park, invited her dog Chi Chi to co-host a special announcement with PETA2 urging the adoption of pets versus buying them in stores.

Diaz and Chi Chi are cute as buttons, but wouldn’t it be great it one day there wasn’t a need for PSAs like these? If people won’t adopt cats, dogs and other animals voluntarily, maybe law will require they rescue shelter animals instead.
