Why is our approval rating of the Food Network rising? Hmm..There’s this reason. And that one. And now, one more vegan friendly company, Xan Confections, will be showcased on the nationally televised show, Unwrapped, this weekend on July 17.
Unwrapped is a show that traces the origins of food from the very first speck of flour, and Xan Confections will detail how chocolate expert and director of research and development Tracey Downey created unique dairy and sometimes gluten-free sweets, such as the non-dairy ancho chili caramel, containing Alderwood smoked salt and ancho chili flavoring. There’s also six flavors of the signature vegan Jewel caramels–coconut pecan, espresso almond, butterscotch snickerdoodle and bananas foster.

Eco Chef application
Raw chef guru Bryan Au has his own iphone application.
The Eco Chef App, available from itunes for $1.99, offers dozens of raw, organic, vegetarian and vegan recipes from lasagna to desserts. The user can pick recipes from several cuisine types like American, Italian, Indian and Chinese, which are given as either listed instructions or how to videos. There is also an opportunity to ask Chef Bryan those tricky questions like “Can I substitute walnuts for cashews in the raw cheese?” Personally, we’d stick with the cashews, but it’s best to clear that up with Chef Bryan.
Debuting last month, Eco Chef became quite popular, rising to the top 10 lists of apps on itunes by July 4th.

Olivia Munn joined protesters from Last Chance for Animals and PETA in Los Angeles Staples Center recently to speak against Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey, which is performing in the city through Sunday.
Munn said, “When you look at something like the circus and everyone’s laughing and there’s color and there’s music and everything seems so great. But when you go right behind that door and they’re in these crates all day long and then they’re getting shocked and beat just so they can get up and dance around on a ball … it was just so sickening.”

Model Vida Guerra spiced things up on Capitol Hill yesterday when she and a fellow bikini clad woman with real chili peppers dangling from their outfits served approximately 600 veggie hot dogs to celebrate National Veggie Hot Dog Month, created to counteract National Hot Dog Month, both occurring during July. Former Top Chef contestant Carla Hall, who was known for adding her vegetarian variations to the table, participated in Backpacker magazine’s annual Adventures in NYC event in Central Park where she and two other contestants (including the gear editor of Backpacker) presented a backpacking cooking showdown, preparing a 20 minute meal easily prepared on a camping trip.
Hall’s Vegetarian Quesadilla came in 2nd, but Backpacker gear editor’s pizza was at least vegetarian based too.
Now would be a great opportunity to tell you about a guide to getting a meatless, lipsmackin’ vegetarian experience on the trail.

It may be hard to picture a glamorous actress like Pamela Anderson picking up poo, but it’s all a labor of love for the former Baywatch star, vegetarian and animal rights activist.
Anderson gives her time to the California Wildlife Center in Santa Monica, California, where her duties include feeding baby owls and making good use of the pooper scooper.
Anderson told UK’s Fabulous magazine, “I clean out all the poop in the birdcages and feed all the little owls – the baby ones – with frozen mice parts. Occasionally a little frozen paw or ear will fall off!”
