So what does it mean exactly to be an environmentalist on a daily basis if you are not thinking about the number one cause of global warming or one of the top two or three causes of all other environmental problems?”

Mark Bittman Leaving “The Minimalist” For Sustainable Food Column

Mark Bittman

After 13 years of entertaining readers with food writing and recipes in his weekly New York Times column, “The Minimalist,” Mark Bittman has announced he’s starting a new opinion column for the newspaper, starting February 6, 2011.

Bittman’s new column will focus on eating practices sustainable for the environment, food politics and health and nutrition. It will run online and occasionally in print.

Eco-Sex

When we first introduced you to Stefanie Weiss, we were discussing the issue of planet overpopulation (i.e. Octomom procreating again) and the environment.

Weiss, the author of Eco-Sex, a book about doing the nasty without making the Earth nasty, has written a piece at the Huffington Post, which gives treehugger sex kittens a few bits of advice, including some suggested plant-based aphrodisiacs.

Jonathan Safran Foer

After several months of intensely investigating animal farms before penning the book, “Eating Animals,” Jonathan Safran Foer knew he needed to stay the course and eat vegetarian.

Convincing his dog to follow this same, animal and eco-friendly diet, however, may take some work.

Foer revealed to The Guardian, “I tried, but it just didn’t sit well with her stomach. I don’t feel guilty about it – dogs aren’t people.”

How do pregnant celebrities that follow a vegan diet like Natalie Portman and Alicia Silverstone feed their bump?

It should come from plants, according to Terry Walters, author of “Clean Start” and “Clean Food,” a book about eating seasonally. Walters is a food educator and on the board of directors at one of the largest urban organic farms in the United States.

“[Dark leafy greens] might not have as much calcium or minerals as a glass of milk,” said Terry, “But we are better able to access more minerals.”

If there was one resolution cookbook author Christina Pirello wanted to keep, it was to refrain from getting angry.

Unfortunately, an article she read in a magazine which touted “heart-healthy” meals containing meat was enough to make her renege before the end of January.

“I get to the article–there’s about 7 dishes. Not one dish is based in veggies. Oh, they might have some zucchini thrown in or a little broccoli stirred in, but that’s it…If it didn’t have processed grain, it had animal food. Very likely both. Not one was vegetable-based.”

Not to worry, though. Pirello has picked up where the article left off and unveiled her “Healthy Cookbooks To Start The New Year.”
