Skinny Bitch co-author Rory Freedman will be emceeing the Los Angeles premiere of Vegucated, a vegetarian documenetary that follows the lives of several people who are transformed by the diet.

“I love this film.,” Freedman said. “Not only does it cover the hows and whys of healthy, humane eating, but it captures the OMGs and WTFs of the transformation process.”

Jonathan Safran Foer sat down with A.V. Club to discuss all the things he’s considered an expert on–food, vegetarianism, farming and animal welfare.

The author of Eating Animals did a great job of touching on many questions that arise when the idea of eating vegetarian is brought up, including the price of food, humane labels and why your family that lives in a town of 500 people still declares World War III when you refuse to eat turkey at Thanksgiving.

On that meat eater defensiveness:
The reason people have such strong opinions about it is, we can’t help but think that our response to these questions has something to do with what kind of a person we are. I think it’s because whatever conclusions you reach—and I think there are lots of different respectable conclusions one can reach—everyone recognizes that this is a big deal. It matters.

Jonathan Safran Foer will be presenting at the Australian Festival of Dangerous Ideas on October 1 in Sydney.

As you might guess from the title, the festival is meant to discuss anything that challenges the usual way of thinking. Ideas that disrupt traditionally thinking may be considered “dangerous” and unfortunately, even though it’s 2011, in some places, vegetarianism is still one of them.

Foer interviewed with the Sydney Morning Herald to expand on why “seitan” may scare more people Satan.

Okay. So you’ve finally made the decision to change your eating habits because you know that daily burger isn’t doing anything for your health or the environment and the last farm sanctuary you visited made you want to freak your doberman out by introducing him to his latest animal housemate Mr. Pig.

Meatless Monday is a good start, but is the 4th of July holiday the best time to convert, considering there will be all those hot dogs, burgers and other meaty goods on the grill?
