Moby Cheated — Vegan Superstar Confesses All To Grist.org

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, March 27th, 2010 in Food & Drink, Male Musicians, Male Singers.

Moby the New York premiere of The Runaways

After learning that Moby is not the uptight, holier than thou vegan he was years ago, Grist.org provides more insight as to why he’s more likely to turn the other cheek and quietly suggest you do better next time if you indulge in some macaroni and cheese at a mom and pop’s diner in the middle of nowhere on a road trip.

You see, Moby has fallen a few times in his life. And he’s fessing up.

“In the last 22 years, I cheated twice. I had, and this is going to sound so crazy, I had yogurt in 1992, and I have to say it was really good. And about five years ago, I was talking to a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner, and he said I should start eating eggs. So I went to the store and I bought organic, free range, locally grown eggs and I tried to eat an egg, but I just didn’t like it.”

The experience didn’t send him into a lifestyle of reckless, dairy debauchery, but instead served to confirm his values, making him a “born again” vegan.

“I was just reminded of why I’m a vegan, but really I don’t judge people’s lifestyles. If someone chooses to eat meat or dairy, that’s their choice. I just think that meat and dairy can be produced a lot more ethically than they currently are being produced and with much less impact on communities, on the environment, and on people’s health.”

ELLE Style Awards 2010 - Arrivals

30 Seconds to Mars singer Jared Leto has revealed secret, possibly rooted in ancient tradition, ceremonies he and the other two band members, Shannon Leto and Tomo Milisevic, share.

Instead of sacrificing animals before a performance, Leto says soybeans are offered.

“Well there was a time when we used to sacrifice goats but then we all became vegans so we’ve been sacrificing tofu before the shows!” Leto joked on Myspace, according to Gigwise.

Dude is close to 40, but doesn’t look like he’s legal to even play at some of the venues where 30 Seconds takes the stage.

The youth gods must love tofu!

Oprah.com Dispels Vegan Fashion Myths With Vaute Couture

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, March 27th, 2010 in Fashion.

Stella McCartney Fashion Show - Paris

Oprah.com is featuring Vaute Couture founder Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart, as she explains how being vegan is more than what you put in your mouth.

The vegan fashion designer who’s collections are favored by celebrities such as Ginnifer Goodwin, has listed five major misconceptions people have about vegan clothing, along with her explanation of why these myths aren’t true.

One common complaint you might hear from someone trying to go vegan on a budget is the price, for example.

Leanne explains that not everyone needs to purchase the $1,300 Stella McCartney dress and places like Target may give you the synthetic style you need without giving up an entire month’s rent.

“Whether you’re in the market for a $30 vegan bag or a $1,000 vegan coat, you can and will find something on any budget. “It’s a matter of scale,” Leanne says. “A small, independent label using cutting-edge fabrics will have higher costs per piece because they aren’t spreading out a large production run.””

Animals that aren’t killed for clothing aren’t necessarily treated well to obtain fabrics, and serious vegans needs to consider the pain involved in harvesting items like wool and down.

“Weeks after birth, most lambs have their ears punched and tails chopped, and most males are castrated—all without anesthetics. Shearing isn’t any better; it’s done for speed rather than precision and often results in bloody slashing and mutilation.”

The Surfrider Foundation's 25th Anniversary Gala

Alexandra Paul‘s brother went to prison for his involvement in burning down a horse slaughter house.

The activist was always known to his sister for being passionate about animal rights, but like many who serve behind bars, he’ll come out changed for the better–this time healthwise.

Jonathan gave up smoking, lost weight and now teaches spinning and boot camp classes to fellow inmates.

He also ran his first marathon–by doing 95 laps around the track at the medium security correctional facility he now calls home.

Alexandra writes in the Huffington Post:

“With all the sadness and pain that a family feels when a loved one goes to prison, there just may be a silver lining. My brother will come out still the passionate animal rights activist I love and admire so much, but he will have added marathon runner to his life resume. And probably at least 4 years to his life for having quit smoking the day he entered prison.”

Having never exercised regularly before, Jonathan gradually worked up to 6 miles a day, and caught the attention of the guards as not only the “vegan who reads all those books about global warming,” but also a runner

As a environmental activist, Jonathan’s decision to quit smoking sets just as good of an example as refraining from animal products.

Not only do cigarettes pollute indoor air quality and put everyone at risk for health problems, some data suggests cigarette butts are the  most littered item in the U.S. and account for 50% of the litter in the developed world.

Whether it’s a patch, gum, buddy system or replacing a cig by munching on celery, investigate how to quit smoking today to be a better steward of the earth.

Classic Rock Roll Of Honour - Show

When on tour, Chrissie Hynde and The Pretenders love to engage in some serious avocado snacking.

“We must be the only band that on our catering there’s a big bowl of avocados!” Hynde told stuff.co.nz.

But there’s no guacamole dip being passed between the band members.

Chrissie and her crew prefer the green goodness between slices of bread.

“Nick, my bass player, has this secret recipe for avocado sandwiches which we eat every night on tour,” Hynde explained.

An avocado a day may keep the bad cholesterol away for the band, as the fruit is rich in heart healthy monounsaturated fat, shown in several studies to lower both LDL “bad” cholesterol and triglycerides.

If you get the chance to ask Hynde for her autograph, see if she’ll scribble the sandwich recipe on the CD jacket as well.

Woody Harrelson taught fellow vegan screen star Alicia Silverstone what products she should be using in her bathtub.

According to Metro, Harrelson was entertaining Silverstone with his family and the actress was going to take a bath outside.

“Woody said, “I don’t want my kids getting in your bath. Look at all the products you’re using.”

“You can’t even read the ingredients and they’re going into your skin.”

“That was a big awakening for me. That was the day I learned the importance of natural products.”

If you don’t have a famous actor teaching you the propers of cleanliness, there’s always the Cosmetics Database at cosmeticsdatabase.org.

Going to the home page and typing in the name of a brand or product will give you a score of how safe the product is for your skin based on ingredients shown to cause health problems.

The greater the score, the greater the hazard and you probably should try another product.

Ingredients like Butylene Glycol, may score lower with reactions listed such as skin irritation, while DMDM Hydantoin or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (both found in shampoos and soaps) indicate higher risks.

Queen Guitarist Brian May Opposes Welsh Badger Cull

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, March 26th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Male Musicians, Male Singers.

Avatar - World Premiere - Red Carpet Arrivals

Queen guitarist Brian May is opposing the practice of culling badgers in West Wales as a method to prevent Bovine TB.

Although the Welsh Assembly is convinced the cull will help control the outbreak of TB in cattle, May says the decision is based on bad science.

“This would be genocide,” May, a doctorate in astronomy, said. “To me, countries do not matter; badgers are not British, they belong to the world and they belong to everyone.”

He compared the culling to solving the problem of disease in cattle to eradicating smallpox by killing people with certain hair colors.

“Anyone would think that doing that was insane, but that is what we are proposing to do to badgers.”

Dr. Christianne Glossop, the chief veterinary officer for Wales, defends the practice, citing the costs involved with the bovine TB crisis during the last decade.

The plan is to limit the cull to an area where 42% of cattle farmers had an outbreak of bovine TB.

Previous badger culls revealed less than 2% of the creatures were actually infected with the disease and some experts believe that cattle to cattle transmission may be primarily responsible for the outbreak.
